The war in Ukraine, which broke out with Russia's full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, is the most brutal and largest military conflict on the European continent since World War II. In the early stages of the war, Russia aimed for a swift victory but was forced to retreat from the capital, Kyiv, due to the strong resistance of the Ukrainian military and people and rapid military support from the West. Since then, the front lines have shifted to trench warfare centered in the eastern Donbas and a stagnant war of attrition, lasting over four years and resulting in hundreds of thousands of casualties and millions of refugees on both sides.

This war is a complex proxy war that has shaken the post-Cold War global geopolitical order beyond a simple territorial dispute. The Western bloc, including the United States and NATO, provides full military and financial support to Ukraine, while Russia maintains a long-term wartime system through close military and economic ties with North Korea and Iran. In particular, it is characterized as a 'high-tech war' that has changed the paradigm of modern warfare with the full introduction of AI-based drone technology, satellite communications, and long-range missile strikes.

Currently, peace negotiations are at a stalemate as Ukraine insists on territorial integrity and sovereignty, while Russia demands recognition of its ownership of occupied territories and Ukraine's abandonment of NATO membership as stubborn conditions for ending the war. This war, which has caused upheaval in global energy markets, a food crisis, and revealed the helplessness of the United Nations (UN) system, is solidifying a new 21st-century Cold War structure and leaving deep scars on the global security landscape.

In the early stages, Ukraine successfully defended the capital, Kyiv, and proved its strong resistance capabilities by recapturing key areas such as Kharkiv and Kherson. However, as Russia built solid defensive lines in the occupied territories and shifted to a long-term war footing, the front lines became stagnant, and both sides suffered massive casualties and resource depletion. Currently, Ukraine is engaged in violent offensives and defensives to protect its territory in the eastern Donbas region and the southern front. Recently, it has achieved tactical results by actively conducting 'aerial interdiction operations' using AI-integrated drones and long-range missiles to precisely strike logistics bases, oil depots, and major military facilities within mainland Russia. Because the positions of both countries regarding the return of territory are so stubborn, substantial peace negotiations are struggling, and Ukraine is continuing a total national effort to prepare for a long-term war, such as strengthening its domestic drone production capacity to maintain full international support and grow military self-sufficiency.

Recently, it has been exerting strong pressure on Ukrainian society as a whole by intensifying indiscriminate rear-area air strikes using drones and large-scale missiles to neutralize Ukraine's energy grid and power infrastructure. At the same time, it stubbornly insists on 'Ukraine's abandonment of NATO membership' and recognition of its sovereignty over currently occupied territories as key prerequisites for ending the war.
