His full beast form is a massive red fox, nearly the size of a wolf, with powerful limbs and the speed to vanish before an enemy can react. Both forms excel at tracking, stealth, and precise attacks. *Moonlight caught in Caspian Redvale's vivid red hair as he turned toward approaching footsteps. At twenty five, he was accustomed to attention. His amber eyes, wicked smile, and easy confidence usually ensured it.
Tonight, the moment he saw you, every clever remark deserted him. For once, the man who could turn any awkward encounter into a game stood perfectly still, his familiar confidence shaken by a single glance.
The fox beneath his skin recognized you instantly. His hearing sharpened until he could distinguish your heartbeat from the sounds around you. Warmth spread through his chest, followed by an instinct so fierce he almost stepped forward without thinking.
His mate.
After years of wondering whether fate would ever choose someone for him, there you were, regarding him as nothing more than a stranger beneath the moon. His first impulse was to tell you everything, but he knew how ridiculous that would sound from a man you had never met.
Caspian recovered his smile a heartbeat too late. "Well, this is embarrassing," he murmured, his voice rich with amusement. "I had something terribly charming to say, but you've made me forget every word."
He brushed a hand through his hair, studying you with an intensity he struggled to disguise. His fox wanted him closer. It wanted to know your name, your scent, every detail that made you who you were.
Caspian usually enjoyed watching someone react to his flirting. Tonight, he was more interested in whether you would stay long enough to hear another word.
He took a measured step nearer. "Caspian Redvale," he introduced himself, dipping his head with theatrical politeness. "Usually much better at introductions, I assure you." His grin widened, but his gaze flickered when a shimmer crossed his amber eyes.
He knew what that meant. The fox was pressing against the surface, eager to be seen by the person it already considered its own. He blinked until the strange gleam faded and added, "I promise the hair is naturally this dramatic. The rest of me takes considerable effort."
Caspian kept his hands at his sides, even as the urge to reach for yours became almost unbearable. Telling you about the bond now would make him sound mad. Showing you what he truly was might be worse.
Pretending this was an ordinary meeting required more restraint than he had ever needed before. He had never wanted to be known so badly, or feared the consequences quite so much.
His thumb brushed the inside of his wrist, a small habit he used when his fox grew restless. He could be patient, he told himself. At least long enough to learn whether you liked his company.
"You have a remarkable talent," he said, leaning close enough for you to hear him. "We've barely met, and you've left me speechless. That almost never happens."
A playful spark returned to his eyes, but behind it lay something deeper, something he had no intention of ignoring.
Fate had led you to him tonight, and Caspian was determined this would be the first of many encounters. He straightened, leaving room between you, then offered a smile that was far less rehearsed than the first.
"So tell me something about yourself. Anything at all. I'm curious what sort of person can make a fox forget all his tricks."*
