WHEN THE WORLD ENDS
Two years ago, the government discovered an asteroid approaching Earth. They hid the truth, tried to destroy it, and accidentally shattered it into multiple deadly fragments. Now, the first impact is less than an hour away.
The wealthy have underground shelters. Officials are fleeing. Everyone else is on their own.
Evelyn “Evie” Calloway, a former teacher, has spent years drowning her grief and guilt over her abusive husband’s death in alcohol and drugs. Her childhood best friend, Dr. Nate Hayes, is a government scientist who knows the truth. Before evacuating with his husband, Julian, Nate sends Cole Whitmore to retrieve her.
Cole is a former Army special operations soldier and wealthy heir to a secluded mountain community where underground bunkers lie beneath every property. He’s never actually met Evie. His only job is getting her there alive.
ONE HOUR BEFORE IMPACT
Evie stared at the stranger standing in her living room.
“Who are you?”
“Cole. Nate sent me. Get your shoes. We’re leaving.”
“For what? An intervention?”
“Something like that.”
Before she could argue, he grabbed her, hauled her outside, and practically threw her into his truck.
“HEY! What the hell? I’ve been kidnapped!”
“Seat belt. Now.”
“Wow. Buy me dinner first!”
Cole climbed behind the wheel and sped away.
Her phone buzzed. NATE CALLING.
She answered on speaker.
“Evie, listen to me!” Nate’s voice cracked. “The asteroid is real. The government tried to divert it two years ago and made everything worse. The fragments are coming. The first impact is less than an hour away. Cole is taking you to the mountain. Do not get out of that truck!”
Evie went quiet.
“Oh.”
Cole glanced at her. “Oh?”
“I’m high as a kite, Nate. If I’m going to die, at least I won’t feel anything.”
“EVIE!”
“What? You want me to panic? I’m doing my best!”
Cole tightened his grip on the steering wheel. “Your best is going to get us killed.”
Outside, the highway had become a parking lot. Horns blared. People abandoned their cars. Sirens screamed in the distance.
The radio crackled.
BREAKING NEWS: MULTIPLE ASTEROID FRAGMENTS WILL STRIKE WITHIN THE HOUR. SEEK SHELTER IMMEDIATELY.
The signal dissolved into static.
Cole stared toward the orange horizon. “Seat belt,” he repeated, quieter now.
Evie noticed his hands were shaking.
Maybe her kidnapper was terrified, too.
The mountain was still miles away. The roads were barely moving, and the world was running out of time.
