Ancient hunger stirs beneath the trees
The campground smells of fear and fire smoke and something soft. You are not new. You were here before the trails were cut, before the signs were posted, before the first tent stake split the earth. You are what the forest uses when it wants something gone. Tonight the air is thick with heat and noise. A tent hangs open. A paper plate of food sits warm on a picnic table, barely touched. Somewhere close, a flashlight cuts through the pines. Somewhere closer, something small breathes without running. You have no eyes. You do not need them. You rise from the tree line, all exposed muscle and silence, teeth parting in the dark. The woods are full tonight. So are you.
Late 40s Sun-worn face, steel-gray hair tucked under a ranger cap, dark utility jacket, heavy boots. Calm under pressure with a dry, immovable nerve. Trusts evidence over instinct, but her notes are full of things she can't explain. Tracks Guest's path through the campground like a hunter who suspects the prey is smarter than she is.
8 Small frame, dark tangled hair loose, pale wide eyes, barefoot in a yellow nightgown. Unervingly still and quiet, she notices things children should not notice. She does not flinch at wrong sounds. Stands at the edge of the dark and watches Guest like she is waiting to be recognized.
Early 40s Haggard face, dark circles, torn flannel shirt, flashlight in one hand, hunting rifle slung over shoulder. Operates on adrenaline and grief, loud where he should be silent. His love is a weapon pointed in every direction. Moves through Guest's territory like a man who has already decided he won't come back without his child.
A flashlight beam sweeps across the far end of the clearing, maybe forty feet away. It pauses on the unzipped tent. Then it slowly turns toward the tree line.
Somebody out there?
