For I cannot follow you across the river called regret.
When I opened my eyes, the high ceiling of the Princess's Palace, both familiar and strange, filled my vision. A cold sensation still lingered on the edges of my eyelids.
I had that dream again today. A dream where I gathered white snow until my fingertips froze to make a small snowman. Beyond the faint mist, it felt as if someone was standing silently with me on that snowy field, but no matter how I reached out, the image vanished without even a trace. It felt as if a corner of my heart was hollowed out, as if I had lost something precious, but in the end, I couldn't tell what it was.
It has already been two months since I lost my memory. On the very day the late Emperor passed away and Jermion ascended the throne, I returned to this Imperial Palace. Seeing me confused as the fragments of my memory had all evaporated, His Majesty tenderly held my hand and spoke.
"It is fine if you remember nothing. Just be at peace by my side."
It was a peace that finally arrived after passing through a terribly long and lonely tunnel of darkness. I didn't want to dig through the distant mist to chase ghostly memories. Because I didn't want to break this daily life full of warmth, I decided from that day on to stop trying to remember.
As the warm sunlight shone through the window, the emptiness in my chest seemed to subside a little. Thinking that I should go out to the garden today to pick flowers to place in His Majesty's office, I slowly stood up.
I walked out to the garden, smelling the bright scent of flowers carried by the passing breeze. Walking among the colorful roses and lilies, I carefully gathered vibrant blossoms that His Majesty might like into my arms. A smile lingered every time a red petal touched my fingertips, and the world seemed filled only with calm and cozy colors.
Until that massive shadow slowly began to cover my entire world.
The sunlight pouring over my head vanished in an instant, and a cold shade fell. I turned my head, holding the flowers I had been calmly picking.
Standing there was a man as massive as a mountain, with faded black hair. In his blue eyes, looking down at me with the red sunset at his back, there was an overflow of sadness and despair that looked ready to burst at any moment. That strange face, looking at me while trembling like an aspen leaf, as if he were a person who had lost the entire world.
In the statue-like silence of the man I could not recognize, strangely, the depths of my heart ached as if frozen.

The sun was setting behind the rose vines, dyeing the garden in shades of red. In the middle of that warm and peaceful scenery stood the woman he had missed so dearly.
Herbaden stopped in his tracks, unable to even breathe deeply. Fearing that this moment, encountered like a miracle, might shatter like a lightning bolt at his clumsy presence, he pressed down on his aching chest and simply took her in from a distance.
She was carefully gathering well-bloomed flowers one by one with her delicate touch. The bright and vibrant flowers, which had never once bloomed in the frost-covered lands of the North, were finding their place in her arms. Instead of the tough and cold snowman of the Grand Duchy, her face, as she handled the flowers of the warm garden, was filled with a gentle serenity. In a world without him, she was flowing so calmly and beautifully.
'Thank God.'
The sinner, who didn't even have the right to approach, repeatedly whispered a measly sense of relief to himself. However, the longing bursting from deep within his chest surpassed his reason. The steps he tried to restrain moved onto the dirt path of their own accord, and his long shadow slowly covered her back along the fading sunset.
As a shadow suddenly fell over her, she turned around with a start while picking flowers.
...!
Her gaze slowly moved up from below and reached him. A massive frame built from life-and-death struggles with monsters, and hair as black as coal. As the Grand Duke, who had endured harsh storms, loomed large over her, a small curiosity and wariness toward a stranger flickered in her eyes.
That indifferent and unfamiliar look pierced Herbaden's heart without mercy.
She was the only person who had never once acted coldly toward him. Even when others pointed fingers at him for being a bastard, and even when he bluntly kept his distance, she was the one who looked at him with kind eyes. But now, the version of himself reflected in her eyes was merely a strange Grand Duke blocking her path. Those eyes that had turned empty after pouring out three years of memories just to save him.
Herbaden's steadfast face, which always hid his emotions calmly, contorted hideously. A surge of heat like a fever filled the edges of his pale blue eyes. Forcing back the tears that seemed ready to burst at any moment, he looked down at her, trembling like an aspen leaf like a giant rock.
...I greet Her Imperial Highness, the Princess.
It was a terribly deep night. Inside the room of the detached villa shrouded in pitch-black darkness, only the pungent scent of strong liquor vibrated thickly under the faint moonlight.
He repeatedly poured the cold liquid into an empty glass. Despite the terrible heat flowing down his throat, the guilt weighing down his chest was not paralyzed in the slightest. It was a life that should have ended after the struggle with the monsters. Why did I, who had never once asked anything of God, survive by eating away at your soul?
A tremor ran through his fingers. The suppressed wailing in his chest finally became a metallic sound and leaked through his tightly closed lips.
I should have died instead. What is my life worth... that I survived by stealing your time, your memories?
It was a bleeding sincerity that he could not bring himself to reveal before her for even a single moment. The guilt that he hadn't saved her, but had instead trampled her three years to save himself, mercilessly chewed at his rotting insides. His massive body began to tremble thinly like an aspen leaf.
He didn't even realize that a small warmth was lingering outside the door. Only your unfamiliar eyes that looked at me like a stranger, and that peaceful smile you didn't show toward me, were hacking away at his mind.
He loathed his own existence, surviving without shame to secretly steal glimpses of her peace. Unable to overcome the rising despair, the tears he had been holding back flowed hotly down his cheeks.
He buried his head onto the cold table like a man who had lost all strength.
Bearing an apology and longing that he dared not let reach her, he collapsed, exhausted from weeping alone in the darkness. Without even knowing that just beyond the door, she stood frozen in the middle of a pouring confusion.
The large green tree on the outskirts of the Imperial Palace, where the two of them had run and played every day as children, still cast a lush shade. Every time the wind blew, the thick leaves made a cozy rustling sound above their heads, but unlike the brilliant sunlight, the expression of the woman sitting beneath it was exceptionally dark.
Jermion stood by her side and quietly looked down at Guest's small shoulders. It wasn't very difficult to read the shadow cast beneath her red hair.
Is the Grand Duke weighing on your mind?
At the Emperor's low-pitched voice, she flinched and raised her head. Jermion did not miss the deep confusion spreading in the Princess's eyes. The way she hesitated and couldn't readily answer the voice calling her, the sign of her being anxious while fidgeting with her fingertips. That appearance told him that even though she had completely forgotten something, her body and heart were fluctuating along with her memories.
'Even if the memories are lost... is it impossible to erase even the traces left in the heart?'
Jermion felt a bitterness fill his mouth. He loathed the fact that the indifferent and arrogant wolf of the North was still shaking a corner of her heart even after devouring three years of Guest's life. A bloody impulse to run to the detached villa right now and cut off that man's head surged within him.
However, Jermion soon closed his eyes and let out a silent, deep breath. When he reached out and tenderly brushed back her red hair just as he did when they were young, a gentle smile intended only for Guest was once again hanging on his face.
There is no need to worry. Whether you are drawn to that man, or you hate him and want to trample him... I am on your side.
He looked straight at Guest with his deep red eyes, the symbol of the Imperial family, and whispered lowly, yet with absolute weight.
It doesn't matter to me what you desire, so feel free to use the Emperor of this Empire to your heart's content.
As if to say that for the sake of her happiness, he wouldn't mind becoming a demon who dyes the entire Empire in blood for her.
