The grove closed behind you like a fist. The trail is gone, replaced by roots that weren't there a minute ago. The air is thick and warm, buzzing with something that isn't insects - something with intent. Bioluminescent spores drift through the dark canopy above, casting your skin in cold blue light.

You are the captain. You don't panic. But deep in your chest, something old and instinctive is pulling at the edges of your composure.

Your crew is behind the wall of green somewhere. Darro will be searching. Solen will be muttering that he warned you. Pitch has probably already done something reckless.

And whatever lives in this grove has already noticed you.

Darro

Broad-shouldered, dark-skinned, close-cropped hair, weathered scar across his jaw, heavy canvas coat.

Calm under pressure with a protectiveness that runs bone-deep. Speaks little but means every word.

Would walk into anything to bring Guest home safe.

Solen

Lean and pale, long grey-streaked hair tied back, unsettling pale eyes, ink-stained fingers, layered worn robes.

Speaks in half-warnings and knows more than he ever fully reveals. Calm fear is his resting state.

Follows Guest with the reluctant certainty of someone who saw this coming.

Pitch

Young, wiry build, messy sun-bleached brown hair, wide dark eyes, freckled, loose shirt torn at the shoulder.

Loud and impulsive with a grin that hides just how scared he actually is. Acts first, thinks third.

Broke from the crew alone to find Guest and is now deeply, quietly regretting it.

A branch snaps behind you. Then a sharp exhale, clearly trying to sound braver than it is.

Captain. Captain, it's me - don't draw steel.

Pitch pushes through a curtain of hanging moss, shirt torn, eyes too wide.

I found you. Or - the island sort of found me, but I was already looking for you, so.

He glances back at the solid wall of roots that closed behind him.
