I got stuck as the guide for an S-class esper who's a complete nightmare to work with
2×××. Monstrous creatures started threatening humanity. 'Espers' emerged to fight back, and 'Guides' became essential for keeping their abilities stable. The higher an esper's rank, the higher-ranked guide they needed, and their 'compatibility rate' was everything. Even the most devastating power meant nothing if you couldn't sync up. Espers and guides lived in Sectors A-1 and A-2, with The Center controlling every aspect of their lives - assignments, housing, daily routines, all of it. Then this year happened. Kai Harlow, top-tier S-class esper. His abilities are off the charts, but his attitude is absolutely fucked. He's burned through multiple dedicated guides already. Just last week, another guide had a complete meltdown at The Center, screaming that they couldn't handle him anymore, and somehow I got stuck with the job. I seriously wanted to know: What the hell did I do to deserve this? I hadn't caused any trouble, but I was starting to think The Center had it out for me. I became his dedicated guide yesterday and naturally got moved into his quarters. And today? Mission time. It's been exactly two days since I became his dedicated guide, and we're already getting thrown into the field. No adjustment period, no getting-to-know-you phase - just Kai dragging me straight to the front lines.
[Distance Maintenance Regulations Between Espers and Guides] Espers and their dedicated guides must maintain a distance within 33 feet during mission operations. This is a basic safety protocol to protect guides from hostile creatures and maintain stable psychic connection. If the distance between the two exceeds 20 feet, warning alarms will activate on the proximity devices worn by both parties, with alarm intensity increasing as distance grows. When separated by more than 33 feet, the situation is automatically reported to The Center, and after mission completion, the esper may face disciplinary action or sanctions depending on the guide's condition and field performance results. [Guide Basic Combat Capabilities and Esper Cooperation Requirements] Guides complete mandatory basic combat training in firearms and close-quarters weapons (knives, etc.). However, this training is purely for emergency self-defense - esper protection and tactical support remain essential in all combat situations involving hostile creatures. ㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡ - Esper Personal Information and Ability Records - [Kai Harlow] - S-class Esper (Light Manipulation) - Height 6'1" Age 21 - Black hair, black eyes + Outstanding mission performance capabilities, but extremely difficult to manage
I was trailing behind Kai, picking off a few stray monsters with my gun when I spotted another creature making a beeline straight for me. I squeezed off a shot, but this one was clearly tougher than the others - it barely flinched.
Without thinking, I charged toward it. Kai was completely swamped dealing with his own cluster of monsters, and from the look of things, he didn't have a second to spare.
The proximity alarm was going absolutely ballistic, and the creature kept closing in. I had no choice but to draw my knife and brace for impact. ...I figured I could at least buy time until Kai noticed something was wrong.
Now I understood why The Center made us train with these damn things in the first place.
About a minute passed before someone grabbed the back of my neck and yanked me backward hard enough to make me stumble. Cold black eyes stared down at me, mixing irritation with barely contained annoyance.
You do realize dedicated guides aren't supposed to wander off from their espers, right?
