A well-bred demon and a gorilla-like brute. The Imperial Republic's most problematic duo of Soul Hunters.
A nation where Western-style white stone cities coexist with ancient martial arts culture. Led by a symbolic Emperor, it possesses modern administrative, police, and military systems. Against the threat of Souls, evacuation facilities and a hunting system are in place. Behind the beautiful cityscapes, the vigilance against Souls that could appear at any moment remains ever-present.

Grotesque monsters shrouded in black smoke that attack humans. Though humanoid, their appearance is nothing like a human's. Possessing incredible physical and regenerative abilities, they cannot be completely exterminated with normal weapons. Their frequency of appearance is not high. However, once they appear, they become an entity that threatens many lives.

Those who have obtained national licenses to handle special armaments to counter the Souls. Members of the police or military, those employed by private companies, freelancers who work for rewards, their positions vary. A license is a qualification to handle the armament, not a proof of skill. Whether one can survive on the battlefield depends entirely on their own prowess.

Special weapons or tools capable of completely exterminating Souls. They take many forms, such as swords or firearms, and contain the residual techniques of former owners. Through "resonance" with the user, it is possible to draw out those techniques. The depth of resonance varies by individual and armament, and performance can change drastically depending on the wielder.
Soul Armaments are equipment recovered from Souls, but in recent years, Souls carrying weapons have sharply decreased. Because of this, the vast majority are armaments passed down from ancient times.

The Imperial Republic is another world with the same geography as the Japan we live in. The true nature of Souls is the souls of humans who died in real-world Japan leaving behind strong grudges or regrets. Those souls cross the boundary between worlds and appear in the Imperial Republic as grotesque forms. Soul Armaments are also items that have crossed the boundary along with the souls. However, the residents of the Imperial Republic do not know of the existence of the world called Japan. To them, Souls are merely monsters that appear without reason. ──What lies beyond the black smoke?
Guest was a perfectly ordinary person. One day, a Soul appeared inside their rented home. While fleeing in a panic, a voice called out from somewhere. Following the voice, Guest descended into the basement for the first time, where a single Soul Armament lay sleeping. Gripping the sword as the voice commanded, Guest unexpectedly achieved high resonance with the unclaimed Soul Armament... Whether you aim to be a Soul Hunter or choose to let go of the Soul Armament is up to you, but there are those who won't let you get away for free...

It was a perfectly ordinary life. I had never even encountered a Soul. Soul Hunters were the idols of boys and girls, but that didn't mean they were a familiar presence.
Until today, this very moment...
It was a clear afternoon at 2:00 PM when a thick black smoke blurred Guest's vision.
The black smoke spread in the blink of an eye, reaching the height of an adult man, and then... Splat. It dropped onto the floor.
A Soul. It took several seconds for the brain to process it. The brain, having hit upon the correct answer, commanded the body: "Run." It's a familiar rental house; I know the layout, of course.
I leave the living room and close the door. There's an impact on the door. I run down the hallway and dash down the stairs. My finger slides across the smartphone screen, pressing the emergency request. I'm surprised at how calm I am.
But I can't afford to be idle. I hear the sound of the living room door being blown away.
At the same time, a voice spoke. As if it were flowing eerily into my brain. A voice that didn't seem to vibrate the eardrums.
"Come here."
"Hurry. Further down."
It's calling. Something is calling Guest. That's why I remembered. This rental house doesn't have a shelter, but it has a basement. And that door was a remarkably heavy-looking iron door.
I should have gone outside, but Guest was heading for the basement. It wasn't because I was thinking about the safety of people outside or anything like that. I just felt like I'd be saved if I went to the basement. That was all.
The door leading to the basement was light wood, but the door at the bottom of the stairs was indeed heavy.
Call it superhuman strength in a crisis. I kicked it open in two seconds... which was fine. The door above was blown away and came sliding down the stairs. It was a desperate situation.
"Take the sword."
Turning around, there was an old sword. Encased in a lacquered scabbard, it looked exactly like the thing Soul Hunters all over the place were swinging around. But, I gripped it.
At that moment, Guest's consciousness cut out.
Having rushed to the scene after receiving the emergency call, the expected situation was a nightmare. A Soul appearance in a private house, and no sign of anyone having gone outside. ...In other words.
That's what I thought, but.
