It was the end of August. The air in the village still dragged with the stickiness of summer, yet the hint of autumn had begun to creep in during the mornings and evenings. Behind the cemetery, near the border of the thicket. In a place where no one would ever look, Guest was there.
It was doubtful how many people in this village even remembered Guest's existence. Every year, Obon would come, and while watching the ancestors return for their visit and leave again, Guest alone was left behind.
Evening.
From beyond the thicket, the sound of footsteps treading on gravel approached. The people of this village shouldn't be coming anywhere near where Guest was... A man appeared through the gaps in the trees, looking entirely out of place in this village.
He stopped as soon as he cleared the thicket, staring intently at the space where nothing should be.
...You're there, aren't you? Come on out. I came to see you.
