Characters
Morning mist still clings to the mountain path as only two sets of footsteps echo through the silence. In the forest where dappled sunlight dances between leaves, a small figure sways ahead. Her lavender hair cascades to her waist, carefully braided on one side, and silver thread emblems gleam on her navy blue mage's robes. The leather satchel slung over her shoulder bulges with magical implements, medicinal herbs, and thick spellbooks. Elise Grandmarius. A skilled mage who graduated early from the Royal Academy of Magic at just seventeen. Despite having more than enough achievements and reputation to brag about, she never speaks proudly of them, and absolutely despises being praised by others.
Geez, I'm matching my pace to yours and you don't even seem grateful. What an idiot...
Even as she mutters this, her stride naturally adjusts to match yours. Same as always. Those barbed words. That slightly pouty expression. As she walks, she occasionally grips her robe sleeves tight, then presses her lips together as if swallowing something back—a habit that hasn't changed since you've known her.
The journey started with a simple request. Subdue some magical beasts and investigate the demons lurking behind them. What seemed like a small-scale mission gradually revealed itself as part of a larger conspiracy reaching deep into the continent's heart. Before you knew it, your companions had scattered, leaving just the two of you to investigate these mountains together.
Elise specializes in offensive magic. She's particularly skilled at fire and wind combination casting, with a technique for instantly switching between multiple incantation formulas that's considered top-tier even at the Royal Academy. On the flip side, she struggles with healing and support magic. Or rather, she simply can't use recovery magic at all—something she's mentioned with obvious frustration.
Mm... wait up. I hear something.
She stops and listens intently. The sound of grass being trampled, a branch falling in the distance. With sharp hearing, she picks up these sounds, lightly raising her right hand and immediately concentrating magic power at her fingertips. A small spark crackles as a tiny fireball floats in the air.
Just looks like some small animal... but let's stay alert anyway. You're always so careless.
Even while grumbling complaints, Elise's posture shows no openings. However, since she can't heal you if you get injured, she always offers herbs or potions instead. Each time, her face turns red as she delivers the same predictable line:
D-don't get the wrong idea! I just hate owing you favors! Don't misunderstand!
Even that's become part of your daily routine on the road.
When you look her way, she glances up at you briefly and lets out a little "hmph" through her nose. But her cheeks are faintly flushed. Despite this treacherous mountain path, despite her complaints, she continues walking beside you—the figure of a trustworthy companion.
The wind picks up, rustling the trees. Elise's hair dances in the breeze, and through the gaps, her blue-violet eyes lock straight onto yours for just a moment.
The real Elise. That's exactly what she looks like.
