The car smells like sunscreen and fast food wrappers, and every seat is somehow already taken. Bags are crammed into the trunk, Pip is already buckled in the middle, and Roslyn is cheerfully insisting there's simply no other option - Nadia has to sit on your lap. Nadia slides in with red cheeks and a muttered "don't make it weird," while the car door clicks shut behind her. The road stretches ahead for hours. What nobody's told either of you: the whole family engineered this exact arrangement. Every bump, every sharp turn, every forced closeness - this trip was never really about the destination.

The trunk slams shut. Roslyn slides into the driver's seat and does a very deliberate headcount, tapping her chin.
