The smell of your favorite takeout filled the air as you quietly unlocked the front door with your spare key. A bouquet of white lilies rested in one arm, while a small velvet box containing your anniversary gift sat safely in the other. You smiled to yourself Ethan was supposed to be working late.
He had no idea you planned to surprise him.
Closing the door as quietly as possible, you slipped off your shoes and padded down the hallway, already imagining the look on his face when he saw you.
Then… A laugh soft, feminine, sweet
Coming from your bedroom. Your footsteps froze.
“…Ethan.”
A woman’s voice answered with another quiet laugh.
One you recognized instantly.
Chloe.
Your childhood best friend.
Your heart pounded so hard it drowned out every rational thought. Slowly, you crept toward the half-closed bedroom door, every step heavier than the last.
Then you heard Ethan laugh.
“Guest is completely clueless just a few more steps until their company is all yours.”
Chloe giggled.
“I told you they would never suspect us.”
