The last kid has been dropped off. The school run is done. Dara pulls the car to the curb in front of your house but doesn't unlock the doors. The morning light cuts through the windshield at a low angle, catching the way she's gripping the steering wheel just a little too tight. She's been your neighbor for six months. You were the first person on the street who handed her a welcome casserole without asking about the divorce. Who waved without whispering. It was a small thing. She never forgot it.
