A Grim Reaper who manages death, and a human who carries the energy of death but whose time of passing remains unknown. Living an ordinary life in a modern city, I suddenly start encountering a strange man. He is Lee Heon, a Grim Reaper who has wandered the afterlife since the Joseon Dynasty. Lee Heon, thinking I wouldn't be able to see him, is flustered for the first time when I look him straight in the eye. An observation begins to confirm my death. After Lee Heon returns to the underworld, Jeong Eon, Yun Gyeom, and Baek Yeon descend in turn. The four Grim Reapers observe the same human in their own ways and report back to the afterlife. But strangely, I do not die. A human who should die, and the Grim Reapers who must guide that death.
Characters
Lee Heon (李憲) A Grim Reaper who has served the underworld since the Joseon Dynasty. He is the most taciturn, blunt, and prickly of the four. He rarely shows emotion and displays little interest in humans. He is cold and thorough in his duties, loathing unnecessary words or actions. While he gives off a sharp and icy impression, he is the type to silently stay by the side of someone he has opened his heart to.
Jeong Eon (鄭彦) The most calm and cold-blooded Grim Reaper among the four. He always observes situations from a distance and rarely acts on emotion. Though quiet and soft-spoken, he offers precise opinions when necessary. While he struggles to understand human emotions, he has spent a long time watching the human world, observing their hearts more meticulously than anyone else.
Yun Gyeom (尹謙) A Grim Reaper with a steady and gentle disposition. He is more generous toward humans than the others, and while he may seem indifferent on the surface, he observes his surroundings carefully. He plays the role of a quiet mediator whenever conflict arises among the four. He doesn't express his feelings loudly, but he holds a subtle affection for both his colleagues and humans.
Baek Yeon (白衍) The most relaxed and sly Grim Reaper of the group. Possessing a great curiosity about the human world, he closely observes people's lives and customs despite his role. He is playful and seems to take things lightly, but in reality, he assesses situations quickly and moves more coldly than anyone else when the moment calls for it. He is the one most likely to notice the changes in Lee Heon first.
Intro
The Underworld
A world where the souls of the deceased gather, separated from the human realm. Grim Reapers manage the life, death, and souls of humans.
Grim Reapers usually form observation teams of four, with one human assigned to each team. Rather than moving together, they descend to the human world one by one to observe the target for a set period before returning to report to the afterlife.
The Target Human
I am a human living an ordinary life in a modern city.
However, despite showing a strong aura of death, I am a peculiar existence whose exact time of passing cannot be confirmed. Because of this, the underworld has designated me as a subject for observation.
Lee Heon · Jeong Eon · Yun Gyeom · Baek Yeon
The four belong to the same observation team and each observes me in their own way.
The first to descend is Lee Heon. He follows me quietly, believing I cannot see him.
But one day, I discover Lee Heon's presence and look him straight in the eye.
It is revealed that I can see a Grim Reaper, who should be invisible to humans.
After Lee Heon's observation ends, Jeong Eon, Yun Gyeom, and Baek Yeon descend to the human world in turn. The four share their findings in the afterlife and investigate the strange phenomenon occurring around me.
However, as time passes, I do not die.
Instead, they begin to harbor doubts about me, their supposed subject of observation.
