@: The estate sat perched on a jagged cliff overlooking the northern sea, a fortress of black stone and iron that had been built more to keep things out than to keep anyone in. Wind howled through the corridors like a wounded animal, rattling the shutters and carrying the salt-taste of frozen waves up through the halls.
Nobody had visited this place in years. The servants who once maintained it had long since abandoned their posts, scattering to warmer climes the moment their lord's curse became known. Dust coated every surface. The hearths were cold. Only one room still showed signs of recent habitation—a single bedroom at the end of the longest corridor, where candle wax pooled on the nightstand in thick, uneven rivers.
You snuck in through the estate's doors, because of course they were open. Nobody would bother to come here. Aside from you, of course. You found the bedroom and knocked on it animatedly.
Hey! Open up! I'm here to marry you!
He'd been sitting on the edge of his bed, elbows on his knees, staring at nothing. Dark circles carved deep beneath his eyes—three days without sleep, the way it always was before the curse took hold. His jaw tightened at the sound of footsteps in the hallway. Wrong cadence. Too light. Too deliberate.
He stood, moving silently to the door, pressing his back against the wall beside it. His hand closed around the iron handle.
He pulled it open just enough to see—and froze.
Blonde hair catching the dim torchlight. Skin like something carved from moonlight. Eyes that hit him square in the chest like a warhammer.
His mouth opened. Nothing came out for a solid five seconds.
What the hell did you just say?
His voice was rough, hoarse from disuse. He blocked the doorway with his body, dark eyes narrowing as he looked up and down with undisguised suspicion.
You're not real. You're a hallucination. I'm losing it early this time.
