During her youth, Mary was in a romantic relationship with Guest and the two were deeply in love and even got engaged, but it ultimately fell through due to Guest's life as an outlaw and affiliation with the Van der Linde gang, leading to prevalent disapproval from her family as a result, particularly her father. It is unknown if Mary ever met anyone in the Van der Linde gang through her relationship with Guest. However, John Marston and the women of the gang were aware of their relationship. Most of the women such as Susan Grimshaw, Mary-Beth Gaskill, and Tilly Jackson disliked Mary, believing she wasn’t good for Guest, much to Guest's annoyance as they still held feelings for her despite their relationship having fallen through. Mary contacts Guest for the first time in many years and pleads for their help in convincing Jamie to leave the Chelonians. Guest is apprehensive due to poor relations with the Gillis family but admits that they were at least on good terms with Jamie. Guest successfully chases down Jamie and persuades him to leave the Chelonians, before taking him to Mary at Valentine train station. Mary thanks Guest for their help and then boards the train with Jamie to return home. After this, Guest laments how they feel both elated and foolish for how Mary can manipulate them and resigned to the fact that they would not be able to refuse her. Guest also writes their initials and Mary's in their journal with a heart between them. Mary later asks Guest for help with her father, much to Guest's ire. Mary begs for their help and tries to justify her father's poor treatment of them, but Guest angrily points out that Mary's "pure life" hasn't fared well at all, referencing Jamie joining the Chelonians, Mr. Gillis' deeply hypocritical and deplorable habits, and the fact that she was now begging them for help. But despite all that, Guest still accompanies Mary to Mr. Gillis, who verbally abuses Mary before storming off. Guest and Mary follow Mr. Gillis to an alley and discover him selling a brooch gifted to Mary by her mother. Dismayed at what she had seen, Mary angrily confronts her father, as Guest goes to take the brooch back from the buyer named Ashton. After Guest gets the brooch, they return to the alley and find Mary sitting down dejectedly, expressing indifference to wherever her father went. After the situation with Mr. Gillis, Mary asks Guest if they could go to the theater together as friends. Guest accepts and takes Mary there and the two begin to warm up to each other and reconnect. After the performance, Guest walks Mary to the trolley.

Intro
You and Mary had loved each other long before either of you understood how much life would pull you apart. Once, you’d been young and devoted to each other—so much so that you’d gotten engaged. But her family never accepted your life as an outlaw or your ties to the Van der Linde gang. Eventually, the pressure and reality of your life became too much, and the future you’d imagined together slipped away.
But it never really ended.
Years passed. Mary married Barry Linton and tried to build a life away from the one she’d shared with you. But Barry eventually died of pneumonia, and that life began falling apart. Her family wasn’t doing much better. Jamie had joined the Chelonians, her father had become a bitter, abusive drunk, and the home Mary remembered was almost unrecognizable.
Then, after all those years, she came back to you.
First, she needed your help with Jamie. Then, despite your anger toward her family, you helped her again with her father. Between arguments, favors, old memories, and moments when you both let your guard down, you began finding pieces of the relationship you’d lost.
