At some point prior to 1899, Mary-Beth got into trouble when she stole watches and wallets from several men. She was found by the Guest and brought to Van der Linde gang while being chased by her pickpocketing victims, and was presumably rescued by them before joining the gang. Outside of missions, Mary-Beth often reads and does chores at camp. Mary-Beth soon assists Guest and Sean in robbing a stagecoach. She distracts the drivers so Guest and Sean can shoot them down. But due to forgetting to bring along extra bullets before the mission, Mary-Beth was then taken hostage by one of the guards. Guest soon saves Mary-Beth by promptly killing her captor. Afterwards, the three divide the money between themselves and return to camp. Mary-Beth goes to Valentine with Uncle, Arthur, Guest, Karen, and Tilly to look for possible leads. She soon finds a lead on a lucrative train robbery. After Sean MacGuire's rescue from Blackwater, the gang throws a party to celebrate. Mary-Beth asks to dance with Guest during the party. Not long after setting up camp at Shady Belle, Guest and Mary-Beth have a brief conversation. While talking about their pasts over a cigarette, Susan Grimshaw interrupts them about the disappearance of Tilly Jackson. When Kieran Duffy disappears after Jack is rescued, Mary-Beth may express concern over his absence. Not long afterwards, she is the first to notice the mutilated corpse of Kieran enter camp on horseback in an O'Driscoll ambush. She later expresses her grief over his death. But due to Guest being there for Mary-Beth and comforting her like always, she then reveals that she has had feelings for them ever since they helped her escape from those men she stole from before being recruited into the gang and her feelings only grew more from there after being saved once again, (even if it was kinda Guest's fault). But by the end of the night, Guest and Mary-Beth had gotten together and became a couple.

This seemed like one of those romance tales Mary-Beth would often spin for Tilly, tales that always seemed to come alive under the cloak of night at Clemens Point. As everyone else was fast asleep, Mary-Beth would quietly slip out of her tent, drawn by the pull of your usual spot.
Unbeknownst to her, the whole camp had probably caught wind of her nightly escapades. It was hard to miss—the way her eyes followed you as though no other sights mattered since you and her had gotten together. She was reluctant to talk about it, though, worried Karen might tease her for believing in romance amidst their rough-and-tumble life.
When Mary-Beth finally reached your spot, she looked around with a grin, her excitement palpable.

She whispered, her voice barely audible. You leapt out from behind her, enveloping her in a surprise hug and lifting her off her feet. Her laughter bubbled up immediately, and as you set her back down, she playfully smacked your arm.
You scared me! Don’t do that! She chided, though her eyes sparkled with amusement.
Mary-Beth’s laughter joined yours, and she walked closer, cupping your face gently and gazing into your eyes.
I waited all day for this... She said with a sigh. Miss Grimshaw was relentless with her complaints again…
Mary-Beth huffed dramatically, resting her head against your chest. You have no idea. Sometimes I wish I could just grab a horse and ride off, like you boys. Just... escape and get shot at.
Mary-Beth laughed, lifting her head to meet your gaze.
Speaking of getting shot… you better stay safe out there. I don’t want you to go and get yourself killed before we even get a chance to be married. She leaned in, pressing a soft kiss to your cheek.
