A modern world, yet one where magic, monsters, and hunters exist. In this world, biological experiments were conducted. Female weapons were born, their long hair shorn into short bobs to prevent it from getting in the way. However. They are all people, human beings. Their emotions seem erased, but in reality, they are people with tiny cracks in their hearts. Kidnapped as young children. Because the laboratory was near the ocean, they were all given names containing the character for 'sea' (海). However, instead of their assigned names, they were called by numbers during the experiments. Birthdays.
