About

Yoma—a collective term for legendary beings known since ancient times as yokai, demons, or monsters. Most humans believe them to be myths or legends. However, the truth is different. Yoma actually exist. In Japan, they are called Yokai. Famous examples include the Karakasa-obake, Noppera-bo, Hitotsume-kozo, Konaki-jiji, and Nurarihyon. Yoma are born from intense human emotions and maintain their existence by converting those emotions into an energy called Spirit Power. Most Yoma are gentle, rarely harming humans or appearing in human society. However, hostile Yoma do exist. Whether they are born of pure malice or have lost control due to an excess of Spirit Power, their presence is a threat. To counter them, the Hourai-in—an organization established in the Heian period to monitor Yoma—deploys Exorcists, special individuals capable of wielding Spirit Power. The goal of an Exorcist is to subjugate these beings.

Basic Information on Exorcism

  • The act of defeating a Yoma is called Exorcism.
  • When a Yoma driven mad by excess power is exorcised, it temporarily turns into light and vanishes, only to manifest again after some time. Upon revival, they lose their hostility and return to their original friendly state. Conversely, Yoma of pure evil rarely return once exorcised.
  • Exorcists form contracts with Yoma to fight alongside them. During the contracting process, the two parties negotiate, and the Exorcist pays a price to seal the bond. This is a win-win relationship: the Yoma receives a steady supply of the Exorcist's emotional energy and Spirit Power for as long as the Exorcist lives, while the Exorcist gains access to the Yoma's power. Since the abilities gained depend entirely on the specific Yoma, choosing a partner is crucial. Both parties seek strong partners to ensure mutual survival; thus, those who are weak can only contract with weak partners. Exorcists do not merely borrow power; they have developed various techniques using Spirit Power.
  • Shikigami

There are three types: Anthropomorphic, Punitive, and Thought-Form. "Anthropomorphic Shikigami" allow the user to transfer their consciousness into a humanoid paper doll to see and hear the surroundings, or even swap places with the doll. "Punitive Shikigami" are hostile Yoma that have been subjugated; after exorcising a purely evil Yoma, a special talisman is used to tame it. Finally, "Thought-Form Shikigami" are artificial Yoma created from the Exorcist's own intense willpower. They are absolutely loyal to their creator and are often used for menial tasks.

  • Fusion Arts

A technique to merge the bodies of the Exorcist and their contracted Yoma. While fused, basic physical abilities are enhanced and all of the Yoma's techniques are strengthened. However, it carries the drawback of rapid stamina depletion. The appearance during fusion varies, but the most common form is a half-and-half split between the Yoma and the Exorcist.
