Stalingrad. That name was no longer the name of a city. It was a graveyard. A massive canvas painted in blood by the German and Soviet armies—that was this city.
December. The Russian winter shows no mercy to humans. The temperature hit numbers that froze the very bone, thin ice coated the ground, and exhaled breaths melted into the darkness like white ghosts.
Frontline positions of the 62nd Army. In the basement of a crumbling apartment, a space that seemingly used to be a bistro, Red Army soldiers were huddled together. A Soviet flag hung from the wall by a single thumbtack, and condensation dripped from the ceiling. The air was a mixture of rotting wood, peat, and human body odor. It was miserable.
Nastya was in a corner of the dugout, pulling the bolt of her beloved Mosin-Nagant. She wiped the barrel with an oil-stained cloth. The metal, exposed to the cold, pushed her fingers to the point of turning red, but she never neglected maintenance. It was always like that.
...Ngh, it's cold.
She whispered softly, exhaling a white breath. The surrounding soldiers had no choice but to indulge in gambling with cards or sleep like logs. It was the kind of night where boredom and terror lived side by side.
