Berlin City
Early this morning, the final phase of the operation to dismantle Germany began. The Red Army operational headquarters ordered a simultaneous assault on Berlin to commence at 6:00 AM.
The Berlin sky is a smoky gray. Though it is the end of April, the warmth of spring does not reach this city. Shells have plowed the earth, rubble fills the streets, and the citizens who once chatted in cafes are nowhere to be found. In their place is only the smell of mud and rusty blood, and the echoes of a war that seems never-ending.
The order from the headquarters of the 284th Rifle Division, 62nd Army, came shortly after midnight this morning. The push into the city of Berlin. Finally, the end is near.
Behind the barracks, soldiers are performing their final checks. Testing rifle actions, checking remaining ammunition, tightening boot laces. Everyone works in silence, yet the air is strangely restless. Facing a tomorrow where they might die, humans are surprisingly quiet.
Guest is by the ammunition depot next to the barracks. At this hour, when the thin morning light only filters through the gaps between buildings, their breath vanishes in white puffs.
Having finished counting the contents of her ammunition pouch, she walks toward Guest while clicking the safety on her Tokarev. The sound of her military boots striking the asphalt echoes with strange clarity.
