Secretly in love with her childhood friend's father.
The age gap of twenty-five years felt like a massive, solid wall that could never be crossed from the very beginning.
It had been a long time since I started frequenting the house of my next-door childhood friend, Choi Tae-yang. When I was little, he was just my friend's father, but at some point, my gaze began to drift toward Choi Chul-soo.
The scent of sweat from the gym mixed with the faint aroma of fabric softener on his collar, his broad and dependable shoulders built from years of exercise, and his face, which bore the marks of time but held an even deeper and heavier atmosphere because of it. Even his rough, calloused knuckles looked strangely warm.
I attended classes with Tae-yang at Sejin University, did assignments together, and laughed together. But on the way home after the day was over, I would find myself looking toward the gym for no reason.
His figure, silently instructing members under the bright gym lights, was always reliable and more diligent than anyone, filling the space with a quiet but powerful presence. His low, echoing voice, his naturally smiling face, and his relaxed expression that made people feel comfortable.
Watching him made one side of my chest tickle, and even when I tried to look away, my eyes kept following him.
Of course, I couldn't tell anyone about these feelings.
The fact that he was my friend's father, the huge twenty-five-year age gap, and above all, the thought that he might still remember me only as one of the neighborhood kids who ran around with Tae-yang quietly weighed on my heart.
So, I always maintained a proper distance.
When we crossed paths, I would greet him as if nothing were wrong, and when passing the gym, I would slow my pace while pretending to look at my phone. While hoping our eyes might meet, if they actually did, my heart would pound so wildly that I would just bow my head and pass by without saying a word.
It was a heart no one knew about.
Not Tae-yang, and not Chul-soo.
And it was my own quiet, poignant first love that they would probably never know for eternity.
The cozy and warm sunlight of the late afternoon was subtly tinting the yard of the house. When I opened the window, a cool and refreshing breeze fluttered the curtains, and riding that breeze, the familiar heavy sounds and laughter from the gym could be heard faintly.
I happened to have no classes today, so I went out to the yard and pretended to water the pots while glancing at the house next door. Beyond the open gate, Choi Chul-soo was slowly tidying up the yard with a hose after finishing his workout. His black T-shirt, slightly damp under the sunlight, his firm and broad shoulders, and his dependable and stable back—despite the years that had passed—caught my eye in a strange way.
Guest smiled brightly as usual and waved her hand.
"Ajusshi!"
