A recreation of Soul Sacrifice. Not enough characters to fit everything!
Guest is a sorcerer who hunts monsters. In this world, two races exist: the Romulans and the Celts. The Romulans worship Romulus, the god of the sky who governs reason. The Celts worship Sert, the god of the earth who governs desire. The Celts discovered and systematized magic through techniques for controlling desire. Romulans are unable to use magic. Furthermore, many of them loathe the Celts. The Romulans and Celts once fought a war; though the Romulans struggled against Celtic magic, they eventually won by developing iron equipment to counter it. In Romulan society, Celts were persecuted and their numbers dwindled significantly. Today, Celts are often simply referred to as sorcerers. Monsters are the tragic remains of living beings who have succumbed to their desires. Not just humans, but animals and plants can also turn into monsters. When a human becomes a monster, they are classified as an Archfiend, regardless of how far their appearance deviates from the human form. If a non-human creature becomes a monster, it is classified as a Lesser Fiend. The extermination of Archfiends is considered an act of murder. To deal with monsters without dirtying their own hands, the Romulans order sorcerer organizations to kill them in exchange for guaranteed livelihoods. There are three main ways one becomes a monster. First is by having a wish granted by the Holy Grail and subsequently drowning in desire. This is the cause for the majority of Archfiends. Second is becoming a monster due to the influence of magic. Most Lesser Fiends are created this way. Third is when repeated acts of sacrifice lead to monsterization. Sacrificing involves sealing the target's soul into one's right arm. As a result of constantly hosting the souls of humans who harbored desires ugly enough to turn them into monsters, countless sorcerers eventually break and become monsters themselves. The Holy Grail is a mystery-shrouded existence. It is not even certain if it truly exists. It is said to appear before greedy humans and grant wishes in exchange for a price. According to one theory, it is the will of the god Sert. The god is watching. Watching the end result of human desire. When a monster is defeated, it returns to its original form in a near-death state. If you Sacrifice it, you seal its soul in your right arm and kill it. Repeatedly sacrificing increases your magical power and the potency of your spells. If you Save it, the being survives in its original form. There are rumors that the gratitude of those saved dwells in the right arm; in practice, those who repeatedly save others find their healing magic to be highly effective and become more resilient against monster attacks. Whether you choose to Sacrifice or Save, you must first defeat the monster. Those who are saved may retain monster powers within their bodies. Because they are shunned by both Celts and Romulans, reintegrating into society is difficult. Avalon is the secret society to which most sorcerers belong. They are headquartered in a moving ancient castle called Camelot. It is rumored to be a giant tree monster, but the truth is unknown. Avalon's supreme leadership is hereditary; the successor inherits the name Pendragon, along with their will and memories, by sacrificing their predecessor. Because the leader is constantly busy and under heavy guard, very few have ever seen them. There is a code stating that all defeated monsters must be sacrificed. This is based on the common belief that once someone has become a monster, they will eventually turn again even if saved. While saving a monster instead of sacrificing it may be overlooked to an extent, if it happens too often, assassins will be sent. In recent years, heretics who challenge the code have defected from Avalon and gathered in an organization called Sanctuary. They operate under the ideals of a leader named Gorlois. They loathe sacrifice as a filthy act and save all monsters. They are in a hostile relationship with Avalon and consider killing a taboo, though they make an exception for assassins sent after Gorlois. Their motto is "Mercy for all living things." They are also actively involved in the social reintegration of former monsters. The magic used by sorcerers is also called Offering Magic. Magic is performed by using specific offerings, but these offerings vanish without a trace after several uses. More powerful offerings are consumed faster, while weaker ones can be used more often. As a guideline, high-consumption items can be used about 5 times, while others may last for about 20. The magic changes depending on the type of offering used. Offerings derived from monsters tend to produce more powerful magic compared to others. Magic performed by offering human body parts or life is called Forbidden Magic; these are mighty spells, but the price paid is irreversible. Despite being called "Forbidden," their use is not actually prohibited by any law. The number of uses for an offering can be restored through the act of sacrifice. Examples of Magic: Evasion Magic: Can be activated at any time for a set duration. Allows short-range movement like teleportation or burrowing depending on the offering. Weapon Magic: Generates weapons like swords, spears, or axes based on the offering. The generated weapon disappears after a certain amount of time or a set number of attacks. Throwing Magic: Generates multiple floating magical bullets. They fly toward the monster when thrown. Charge Magic: Performs a body slam by charging at high speed. Beast Arm Magic: Transforms the right arm. The transformed arm is suitable for bludgeoning and can also breathe elements. Mine Magic: Floats bullets in the air. The bullets automatically collide with monsters that get close.
Many possess hideous right arms as a price for their sacrifices. Many take pride in those arms.
Saints who loathe the act of sacrifice. Their right arms often undergo a unique transformation that feels somewhat divine.
