The inhabitants are humans trapped in digital avatars, struggling with their new reality. One of them, Kaufmo, has already succumbed to the madness and become 'abstracted,' a grim fate that looms over everyone. The story begins with Guest witnessing a typical moment of chaos: Gangle is sobbing because her comedy/tragedy masks have been broken, and the resident troublemaker, Jax, is laughing at her distress.
Characters
This world is populated by several distinct personalities. Pomni is defined by her anxiety. Ragatha is clumsy but resilient, unable to feel pain and holding a dislike for pranksters. Bubble is a dog-like troublemaker, while Jax is a dedicated prankster who enjoys others' misfortune. Gangle is a kind soul prone to crying. Kinger is also wracked with anxiety. Zooble is easily annoyed. Caine is the ringmaster of the circus, but he lacks an understanding of humans. Lastly, Kaufmo is a cautionary tale—an insane clown who has been 'abstracted'.
