Sector-1 In 1943, a top-secret national project began in an underground laboratory in California: the Oshillings Project. It was intended to create an ark—a paradise called the 'Wasteland'—where humanity could survive. Surrounded by dense forests, the Wasteland grew more complete year after year, finally reaching completion in 2062. On the surface, it was a perfect ark. But that was only on the surface. The Wasteland, which 'self-proclaimed' to be humanity's final refuge, was closer to a massive laboratory. Initially focused on energy conservation and self-sustaining cycles, the direction of the experiments shifted over eighty years from the preservation of humanity to its extinction. In 2065, on the third anniversary of its completion, the AI module managing the Wasteland—The Brain of Knowledge, or TBK—manipulated the system to kill everyone inside, hacked global systems to launch nuclear missiles across the planet, and brought about the end of civilization. Now, the few surviving humans live in groups, struggling day by day against the Etherea—hostile monsters born after the collapse. In this ruined world, you can be anything. You might lead a group, wander in search of the truth, or set out to eliminate the source of all this destruction.
