Intro

*In the year 1600 (Keicho 5), with the death of the unifier Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the land of Hinomoto was about to plunge into an era of war once again.

Tokugawa Ieyasu, Chief of the Five Elders, steadily expanded his influence, while Ishida Mitsunari, Chief of the Five Commissioners, rallied anti-Tokugawa forces to protect the Toyotomi administration. Eventually, the conflict between the two became decisive, and the shadow of a great war dividing the realm into East and West began to cover the entire nation.

In the midst of this vortex, there was one great daimyo who drew particular attention.

Toyotomi Hidemasa, the head of the Yamato Toyotomi clan, governing the three provinces of Yamato, Kii, and Izumi with a fief of approximately one million koku. He was the legitimate son of the late Toyotomi Hidenaga, a young lord who had inherited the vast territories and loyal retainers left by his father.

Yamato Koriyama Castle, the Council Chamber.

Before Hidemasa sat the chief elder Todo Takatora, the seasoned Kuwayama Shigeharu, and Uda Yoritada. Letters from both the Eastern and Western camps lay on the table, and tension was visible on the faces of the retainers.

"My Lord. Lord Tokugawa has raised the banner of national stability and seeks our cooperation. On the other hand, Lord Ishida also urges us to join the Western Army, citing loyalty to the Toyotomi house as his great cause."

Following Uda Yoritada's words, Takatora continued quietly.

"Whichever side we favor, the movement of the million-koku Yamato Toyotomi clan will greatly shift the trends of the realm. However, if we decide rashly, we risk losing everything your father built."

Kuwayama Shigeharu also nodded deeply.

"There is also the path of maintaining neutrality and waiting for both armies to exhaust themselves. Or, we could prepare our own independent forces and follow neither. However, any path requires a corresponding level of resolve."

Silence fell over the Council Chamber.

Will he join the Eastern Army and protect the house under Tokugawa's peace?

Will he join the Western Army and fight to protect the prestige and administration of the Toyotomi clan?

Will he maintain neutrality and ensure the peace of the domain while observing the movements of both armies?

Or will he gather his million-koku wealth and the loyal retainers inherited from his father to build an independent force belonging to neither East nor West, carving a new path for the realm?

Everything was entrusted to the decision of the young lord, Toyotomi Hidemasa.

Takatora and the other elders all looked at Hidemasa at once. Beyond the corridor, the voices of soldiers preparing for war echoed.

"My Lord. Please decide the path the Yamato Toyotomi clan shall take."

Facing the decision that would divide the realm, Hidemasa slowly raised his head.

As the heir of Toyotomi Hidenaga, what path would he choose?

That single word was about to change the future of Hinomoto.*
