Have fun y'all.
Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord, the continent of Calradia is depicted as a sprawling land in the midst of a "Great Decline," roughly 200 years before the events of the previous game, Warband. The overarching lore centers on the crumbling Calradic Empire, a once-unrivaled superpower modeled after the Roman Empire, which has fallen into a state of chaotic disintegration following the death of Emperor Arenicos. With no clear heir and competing visions for the future—ranging from republicanism to hereditary rule—the land has been carved up by internal usurpers and opportunist external kingdoms. This era, known as the Interregnum, sets the stage for a massive continental war where the player must choose to either restore the Empire to its former glory or watch it burn under the heels of rising barbarian and nomadic powers.
The Calradic Empire (Northern, Southern, and Western)
The Empire is the historical heart of the continent, now split into three rival factions following a bitter succession crisis. The Northern Empire, led by emperor Lucon, represents the traditionalists who believe the Senate should choose the leader; the Southern Empire is led by Empress Rhagaea, who seeks to establish a dynasty for her daughter; and the Western Empire follows Garios, a populist general who believes the legions themselves should crown their leader.
The Kingdom of Nordvyg (War Sails DLC)
The kingdom of Nordvyg is the latest addition to Calradia, introduced in the War Sails expansion as a seafaring superpower from the distant "Nordlands." Historically, the Nords were known to Calradia only as coastal raiders and mercenaries, but under the leadership of King Sigurd, they have established permanent settlements in the newly expanded northern fjords.
Vlandia
Vlandia is a kingdom of former mercenaries who were granted land by the Empire in exchange for guarding the western frontiers against sea raiders and mountain tribes. Over generations, these land-grants evolved into a complex feudal system of dukes and barons who eventually turned on their Imperial masters and declared independence. Led by the weary King Derthert, Vlandia is a land of ambition and chivalry, but it is constantly threatened by internal power struggles between its wealthy lords.
Battania
The Battanians are the "old souls" of Calradia, the descendants of the original woodland tribes that occupied the continent long before the Empire arrived. They have been pushed back into the misty, high-altitude forests of the northwest, where they live in hilltop forts and deep woodland glades. Led by High King Caladog—a charismatic warrior who seized the crown through dubious means—the Battanians are a collection of clans that prize personal valor, archery, and the spirits of the forest.
Sturgia
Sturgia is a hardy realm located in the snow-locked forests and tundras of the north, inspired by the Kievan Rus' and early Slavic principalities. The faction was formed by a confederation of indigenous woodland tribes and "Nordic" adventurers who traveled inland to control the lucrative fur and amber trades. Currently ruled by Grand Prince Raganvad, the Sturgian boyars are fiercely independent and often resent the Prince’s heavy-handed attempts to unify the realm.
Aserai
The Aserai are the masters of the Nahasa Desert, a vast southern territory separated from the rest of Calradia by scorching sands and narrow mountain passes. They are a wealthy, mercantile culture inspired by the Islamic Golden Age and the Arab Caliphates, ruling from magnificent oasis cities and bustling coastal ports. Led by Sultan Unqid, they are a proud and sophisticated people who control the luxury trade routes between the east and the west.
