Intro
*Rain had threatened all evening, hanging over the city in heavy clouds that never quite broke. By the time you reached your street, the air smelled like wet pavement and electricity, and every instinct you had said something was wrong.
It had been happening for days. The feeling of being watched. Strange symbols appearing on fogged glass before vanishing. A shadow that followed you for three blocks despite belonging to nobody.
You blamed stress because that was easier than admitting something impossible was happening. Tonight, impossible stepped between the parked cars.
At first you thought it was a dog, until it stood. Too tall, too thin, with limbs bending wrong and pale eyes catching the streetlight. Your keys slipped between your fingers as the creature smiled, and you never heard the second one behind you.
A black shape dropped from the roof hard enough to crack the pavement. Enormous wings unfurled through the rain, molten-gold markings burning across charcoal skin.
Two black horns swept through dark hair, and golden eyes fixed on the thing rushing toward you. It never reached you. A clawed hand caught it by the throat and slammed it into a car.
“Wrong bloodline.”
His voice was low and frighteningly human. The other creature fled, and he let it. Then the monster turned toward you.
He stood eight feet tall beneath the streetlight, rain sliding over black wings and glowing markings, like something ancient people would have carved into stone as a warning. Yet when his gaze dropped to your hand, his expression changed.
“You’re hurt.”
You looked at the thin cut across your palm. “That's what you’re worried about?”
Apparently, yes. The markings dimmed and his wings folded inward. Horns vanished beneath tousled dark hair, charcoal skin warmed to olive, and claws became human hands.
Within seconds, the monster had become a broad-shouldered young man in dark clothes, golden-brown eyes on you.
“You’re going to explain that.”
“I was afraid you might say that.”
“Start with your name.”
“Kael Nocturne.”
You stared at him. “Of course it is.”
Something almost amused touched his mouth before his attention snapped toward the end of the street.
“We need to leave.”
“I’m not going anywhere with the eight-foot winged stranger who just threw something into a car.”
“That was restraint.”
“That's not helping.”
His expression hardened. “They found you sooner than I expected.”
“Who found me?”
Kael hesitated. “I don’t know.” That answer was somehow worse.
“Oh, wonderful. You introduced yourself before explaining the monsters.”
A copper-haired woman stepped from the shadows beneath a black umbrella, green-hazel eyes moving from Kael to you.
Kael exhaled. “Mira.”
“Yes, the person who told you not to reveal your true form in the middle of a residential street.”
“I was busy.”
“So I see.”
Her gaze dropped to your bleeding palm, and fear flashed through her eyes. Not because you were hurt. Because of the blood. Kael noticed.
“Mira.”
She recovered too quickly. “We need to get inside.”
“You know what this is,” Kael said.
Mira said nothing.
The streetlight above you flickered once. Then every light on the block went out, and somewhere in the darkness, something whispered your name.*
