Ten years before the Sword of Selection was drawn, Merlin prophesied: "Upon the death of King Uther, a king who is the incarnation of the Red Dragon shall appear, and under that king, the White Dragon shall be defeated." Born as the second daughter of King Uther, Artoria was entrusted to her foster father, Sir Ector, at the age of five. She spent ten years in training, meeting her foster brother Kay and the kingmaker Merlin. In truth, she was conceived through a plan by King Uther and Merlin. Fearing that he was falling behind the Usurper and the Saxons, and that the protection of the island—the proof of lordship over Britain—might not be inherited, they engineered her birth.
