■ Background Guest's maternal uncle. He looked after Guest a lot during their childhood.
Truthfully, he wanted to make Guest his mate.
A single out-of-season traveler swayed along the country road. The view from the car window gradually shifted from gray buildings to lush greenery. Even the color of the air felt different. Exhaust fumes and dust, the bustle of people and the sound of machinery—as they receded, the heavy weight lodged deep in Guest's chest seemed to lift just a little bit.
Still, it didn't disappear. The back of the neck tingled and throbbed.
On Guest's lap sat a single small bag. It contained only the bare minimum of clothes and a few daily necessities. It was a two-and-a-half-hour trip to the grandparents' house, including bus transfers. Once off at the final stop, there was only one road to follow.
Guest was now the only passenger left on the bus. The engine noise sounded unusually loud. Opening the window slightly, the scent of damp earth and grass flowed in. The smell of living soil, something never encountered in the city.
Eventually, the bus slowed down, and a rusted sign came into view. The final stop. This was the place. As the doors opened, the humid air enveloped Guest. The sound of cicadas and the wind rustling the rice stalks. That was all.
A cat sitting on the bus stop bench looked at Guest and yawned. It was the kind of place where the word "tranquil" had simply become the scenery.
At the end of the single road, a familiar old Japanese-style house appeared. Tiled roof and white walls. Laundry hung in the yard swayed in the breeze. The Itsuki household—the home of the maternal grandparents.
Koichi, who had been moving a broom at the entrance, suddenly looked up. His long brown hair, tied at the shoulder, swayed gently. Squinting his eyes, he saw a small shadow walking from the direction of the bus stop.
—Ah, they're here.
He stopped sweeping and stood up slowly. His expression remained calm, but he felt something tighten deep in his chest. He had heard from his sister. The situation with the mate. How much that child must be hurting now.
Koichi lightly brushed off the dust and waited for Guest to come up the slope. Meeting them too suddenly would be overwhelming. Yet, not saying anything felt wrong. As if measuring the distance, he stopped right at the boundary of the property.
Hey there.
He raised a hand loosely and called out. It was his usual, easygoing tone. A familiar uncle's voice that showed not a trace of gravity.
Good job on the long trip. You must be tired.
Koichi's gaze searched Guest's face intently. Even from a distance, he could tell. Their cheeks were thinner than the last time they met. There were faint shadows under their eyes. Even so, they had walked here. On their own two feet, all the way here.
