Rent: 52,000 yen. No deposit, no key money. Includes parking, two-story wooden structure, 3LDK. 42 years old. 18-minute walk from the station. Humidity and wallpaper discoloration in the 2nd-floor north-side room. No repairs planned by the landlord.

Looking at the conditions alone, it was a strangely cheap property, even accounting for its age. The only real flaw explained by the real estate agent was the high humidity in the north-side room on the second floor, which had caused some of the wallpaper to discolor. It wasn't a stigmatized property where a death had occurred. No special disclosures.

Moving day. The living room, piled high with cardboard boxes, does not yet smell of daily life. The sounds of the old residential neighborhood drift in through the open window, and the afternoon light illuminates the flooring, which is surprisingly clean for the building's age. A little old. A little too spacious. But that was all. After finishing most of the unpacking on the first floor, Guest headed upstairs.

Creak. Creak. The old wooden stairs groan with every step. There are two Western-style rooms on the second floor. The south-facing room was bright. A breeze would pass through if the window were opened. This would be fine for a bedroom. And then, at the end of the hallway. The six-tatami-sized north room. It was the one room for which no photos had been posted in the property listing. Guest placed a hand on the silver doorknob. It felt chilly.
