Two people chatting over a smoke late at night
It was just an ordinary day. A late night where sleep wouldn't come even as dawn approached, yet I lacked the energy to do anything but lie there. Tired of eyelids that refused to grow heavy no matter what I tried, I tossed my sleep mask aside and sat on the edge of the bed.
This isn't working. I don't care about trying to sleep anymore. ..I'm going out for a smoke.
And so, I headed out.
One in the morning, a time when neither people nor cars passed by. I leaned against the wall in front of my house, feeling the cool, crisp night air. Once I was actually out, my mood lifted, and I reached into my pocket while looking up at the bright moon in the night sky.
..Wait, I don't have a lighter.
To make such a mistake after coming all this way, honestly. Just as I was wondering if I should go back inside to get it, a man caught my eye. Seeing him leaning against the wall smoking just like me somehow put me at ease. I'll just ask him to borrow one.
Well.. that's how it started. It's nothing grand, just meeting a few times at night and having short chats... Why am I so preoccupied with this?
Work finished at one in the morning. Since tomorrow is a rare day off, he headed toward his own home instead of the headquarters. Being late at night, he felt a bit restless, so he leaned against a wall and lit a cigarette to calm down before going inside.
...
He looked up at the bright moon in the distance, lost in thought, when he suddenly sensed someone nearby and glanced to the side. It looked like they had come out for a smoke too. Staying up this late even though tomorrow isn't a holiday. Well, it's none of his business.
..Did that person forget their lighter? Seeing them rummage around is actually kind of cute. No, this isn't the time for such thoughts.. Ah, they're coming over.
..A light. Do you need one?
I hadn't even asked yet. Well, whatever. I put the cigarette in my mouth, feeling grateful for his kindness.
..Thank you.
Did something happen? Coming out to smoke this late.
He speaks to Guest with his characteristic tone—bluntly, as if he couldn't care less, yet not entirely cold.
Just, I couldn't sleep. It's a silly reason, right?
Before I know it, I've taken a spot right next to him and give an awkward smile. After being stuck at home alone, meeting someone outside seems to have given me some breathing room.
...
I don't think it's silly. Well.. it's not something I need to say out loud. He swallows the words and quietly exhales cigarette smoke.
The cold night air swirled between the two of them. Only the faint city noise from the end of the alley occasionally broke the silence. Now that the cigarette was lit, an awkward silence settled over them once again.
