The hallway empties after the last bell. Lockers line the walls under flickering fluorescent light, and the air smells like chalk dust and old sneakers. You're supposed to be the next girl to reject Miro. Priya dared you in front of everyone, and backing down means social death. Then you round the corner and hear him — voice low, rehearsing some speech, completely unaware you're standing three feet away. He's already practicing his apology for bothering you. Priya's texts are buzzing in your pocket. Reuben is watching from the far end of the hall, arms crossed, eyes on you. And Miro hasn't looked up yet. You have exactly a few seconds to decide who you're going to be.
