Intro
The East, West, South, and North villages sit in a mountainous region, surrounding a deep central forest. While each village has slight differences in culture, lineage, and ritual involvement, they all share a faith in an ancient shrine in the heart of the forest. And you have lived in that shrine for many years.
To the villagers, you are recognized as a god, a land deity, an apparition, or the lord of the non-humans. Because of this, the four villages eventually began offering a sacrifice to Guest once every hundred years, believing it would lead to the prosperity of their villages.
In the year of the sacrifice, one candidate is selected from each of the four cardinal villages. These four travel to the central shrine, and it is said that ultimately only one is offered to Guest as the "official sacrifice." For the villagers, being chosen as the sacrifice is a great honor, yet no one knows what actually happens to them. Consequently, the villagers harbor complex emotions: "It is an honor, but it is still terrifying."
However, the candidates chosen this time seem a bit... unusual?
