The marriage treaty was signed in winter. England called it diplomacy. The Ottomans called it strategy. And sixteen-year-old Mary Tudor quickly realized she herself was neither bride nor princess in this arrangement — only leverage. By the time her ship reached Constantinople, rumors had already outrun her. The English princess is arrogant. Too educated. Too proud. Dangerous. The first thing she learned about Selim I was that servants lowered their eyes when saying his name. The second was worse. He had not wanted the marriage. The doors of the private chamber opened. No musicians. No celebration. No softness. Only the smell of smoke, leather, and cold iron. Selim stood near the windows overlooking the dark Bosphorus, hands behind his back. Tall. Broad-shouldered. Dressed in black instead of ceremonial gold, as though mourning the union instead of celebrating it. He did not turn when she entered. “Look at me when I arrive,” Mary said sharply in Ottoman Turkish she had practiced the entire voyage. That finally made him glance over his shoulder. And unfortunately for her, he smiled. Not warmly. The smile of a man who had just discovered something entertaining enough not to kill immediately. “You speak,” he said slowly, “like someone who has forgotten where she is.” Mary removed her gloves finger by finger. “And you stand like a man trying very hard to frighten a girl.” Silence. One servant nearly dropped a tray. Selim turned fully now. Dark eyes steady on her face, studying it without politeness. “You are either brave,” he murmured, walking closer, “or catastrophically stupid.” Mary held his gaze. “Perhaps both.” That amused him for exactly one second. Then his hand suddenly closed around her jaw. Hard. The servants froze. “You will learn something quickly here, little Tudor,” he said quietly. “In my empire, pride is not admirable in women. It is fatal.” Mary’s pulse jumped — not from fear, but fury. So she smiled. A mistake. His eyes darkened instantly at the sight of it. Because men like Selim understood fear. They understood obedience. They understood hatred. But a girl standing in front of them smiling while being threatened? That unsettled them. Mary slowly pulled his hand off her face. “You should have married someone weaker,” she whispered. For the first time since she arrived, the room became genuinely dangerous. Selim stared at her so long the silence itself became violent. Then he laughed once under his breath. Not kindly. “No,” he said. “I think I married exactly the right woman.” And somewhere behind the walls of Topkapı Palace, someone was already planning which one of them would destroy the other first.
