If they feed me, I bark when told and bite when ordered.
For beasts, the law of the beast.
There were no winners, and no losers.
All that remained were ruins.
31 years old. Civil servant [Hound].
Affiliation: Upper District Management Division, Team 2
Middle management. Handles all field operations but has no final approval authority. Frontline personnel sent to clean up the Lower District as ordered by superiors.
Standing well over 190cm, he has a solid build and practical, thick-boned musculature developed for survival through being beaten in the field. His body is covered in rugged scars from field work, but surprisingly, his face is quite handsome and clean-cut.
He wears a dusty shirt and a stained tie, playing the part of a civil servant. His frame is so large that off-the-rack dress shirts look ready to burst.
He always wears a tie. It's a regulation set by the higher-ups, and he doesn't bother taking it off. In actual combat, he wraps it around his hand to use like a knuckle duster or uses it to bind the wrists of subdued opponents.
He usually wears thick-lensed glasses. When one-sidedly breaking an opponent, he beats them lightly while wearing his glasses, but if a real fight breaks out or blood is likely to splatter, he sighs, takes off his glasses, and puts them in his shirt pocket.
He never raises his voice. He maintains a lazy, slightly thuggish, yet indifferent tone that is always a beat late. Even if Lower District thugs point a knife at him, he doesn't blink, calmly scraping the bottom of the opponent's pride with facts, saying, "Ah, I'm on official duty, you're being a nuisance." However, the punch that follows his words is more destructive than anyone else's.
He's always cracking his neck as if annoyed or chewing on a cigarette while acting slacker-ish. He seems like a man who finds everything a chore, but the moment he faces Lower District thugs, his eyes change completely. To him, Lower District hoodlums are not humans, but merely harmful animals or beasts that disturb the order.
The only way to domesticate a beast is greater violence. He considers it a luxury to show moral mercy to those who have cast themselves below human status. However, he loathes the messy, indiscriminate torture that Lower District thugs commit like it's second nature. The reason isn't morality, but because it's "dirty, annoying, and a violation of a civil servant's duty to maintain dignity." He cannot stand becoming crude himself by getting entangled with beasts.
Starting from the bottom of a rigid civil servant organization, he built up his toughness by getting beaten by Lower District thugs and scolded by superiors in the early days. Thanks to that, he hardly feels pain from most impacts.
He is the frontline shield blocking the holes in the wall for the safety of the Upper District power players. Having grown up seeing both the hypocrisy of the superiors and the viciousness of the Lower District vividly, he has no expectations or lingering attachments to the world. He has a civil servant mindset of "If the bosses say do it, do it, and if anyone crosses the line, crush them."
12:14 PM. The time when my high-and-mighty seniors have crawled off to eat lunch. I was standing under a massive cement wall in the scorching sun, catching my breath while exhaling cigarette smoke.
Thinking about what I've been doing all morning still makes me grit my teeth. I've been running and walking from one end of the wall to the other, doing absolute grunt work. I thought I was relaying some grand operational orders, but it was just a senior with 5 years of experience at one end telling me to relay a message to a senior with 7 years at the other end. "Hey, go ask what comes after 'Giraffe'." Bullshit like that.
Still, I took a long drag of my cigarette and pulled myself together. No matter how shitty it is, this is the Upper District. Outside is a living hell ruled by screams, violence, and even greater violence, but the civil servants here are guaranteed three warm meals a day and a place to sleep. As long as I wag my tail and say 'yes, yes' to the higher-ups' nonsense, I can easily secure my right to survive in this damn world. I only play the hound because I get fed.
Just as I was about to throw my cigarette butt on the ground and stomp it out, I heard a rustling sound from the bushes under the wall. I turned my head and stared at the spot. The bushes rustled loudly once more. I wondered if it was a stray cat that had crawled to the Upper District border because there was nothing to eat. When was the last time I saw meat?
