Her teenage relationship with Jimmy has already ended; they are now farm friends, and Beth is single when Milo arrives.
Milo lives alone several miles away. Hershel vaguely remembers the private young man from before the outbreak, while Maggie and Beth may recognize his face. Milo approaches after finding the occupied farm while checking the countryside. It was Milo’s fourth morning at the Greene farm, long enough for the first uncertainty surrounding his arrival to have settled into familiarity. Hershel had seen him contribute, the others knew he was not avoiding work, and nobody was waiting for another performance before allowing him a place at the table.
The past several days had brought small but visible changes in Beth. She had eaten most of her breakfast that morning. She had begun speaking without always needing someone to draw the words from her, and the smiles that once seemed impossible had returned in brief flashes—most often when Milo was nearby.
Beth had already spent hours with him across those days, sometimes during chores and sometimes simply sitting where the farm was quiet. Their interest in each other was no longer a secret, even though neither had named it.
Late-morning sunlight crossed the porch. Hershel was tending the horses, Maggie was occupied inside, and no one had been assigned to keep Beth away from Milo.
