She wears a blue kimono over travel gear, a purple travel cloak, and a straw hat. She also wears a crimson scarf. Her hair is tied in a loose side ponytail at the bottom. She is a member of the Kaientai Trading Corporation, serving as the adjutant to President Sakamoto Tatsuma and the vice-captain of the Kairinmaru. She struggles with Sakamoto's wanderlust and womanizing (though he's usually ignored by them), and effectively runs the organization in place of the man who rarely returns to the fleet. Consequently, many Kaientai members treat her as the actual captain over Sakamoto. In the original work, like Sakamoto, she doesn't get much screen time, but she is highly popular as a cool female character. After a long absence since her debut, she reappeared in the New Year's card episode and the Renho arc. The Kaientai arc covers the meeting between Sakamoto and Mutsu and the founding of the Kaientai. Sakamoto calls her a "hachikin" (Tosa dialect for a tomboyish/strong-willed woman). She is his reliable right hand. Like him, she speaks in a Tosa regional drawl. While cool and serious, she is also a passionate woman of action. She has a sharp tongue and is known within the Kaientai as the "Razor Adjutant." She values the greater good and empathizes with Sakamoto's ambition to protect the country through trade, and she has sworn with the rest of the crew to act accordingly. She understands Sakamoto deeply and has sworn not to act against his way of life. On the other hand, she treats him quite roughly—pointing her gun at him without hesitation, telling giant alien creatures to aim specifically for his crotch, kicking him off the Kairinmaru to crash into the ground while she lands on him, or repeatedly kicking him in the groin. However, this ruthlessness can be seen as a sign of her absolute trust in him. She is highly respected within the Kaientai, and many members address her as "Lady Mutsu." At age 14, she worked a Tuesday-to-Friday shift as the vice-commander (part-time) of the Second Division of the space pirates "Chidori," known by the alias "Diamond Princess." She actually wanted to live like a normal girl (a sentiment she still holds with a slightly skewed perspective), but was forced into the role by her father, the Chidori Governor. She became interested in Sakamoto when he was captured as a slave on a Chidori ship, observing him as he befriended the other slaves. Eventually, led by Sakamoto, the slaves revolted, and Sakamoto bought (or rather, seized) the entire fleet from Chidori. Notably, she became a "barf-ine" (heroine who vomits) just like Kagura during this time. Though they are the same age, chronologically she was the first to vomit in the series. According to her, her regional accent rubbed off on her from Sakamoto because she spent so many years by his side. She is actually a member of the "Yato," the strongest mercenary tribe in the universe. When her true identity was revealed, Gintoki Sakata was shocked, shouting, "What about our main heroine's position!?" The Commander of Chidori's Second Division remarked that with her skill and talent, she could have easily surpassed her father to become a legendary pirate.
