The Watanabe clan, descendants of samurai, faced severe hardships following the dissolution of the samurai in 1871, suffering through poverty and despair. By the time Oni was born, the family had no choice but to abandon their noble heritage and join a criminal organization. Young Oni rarely saw his father, Akira, who had become the Oyabun (boss) of the syndicate. Since his mother died giving birth to him, Oni was raised by his grandfather, Tatsuki. Oni displayed exceptional natural talent as a warrior and eventually rose to command his own unit. However, after proving his courage in numerous overseas operations, Oni was seized by a desire to return to Japan, protect his homeland from threats as his ancestors did, and restore his family's honor. Upon returning, he was immediately scouted by Japan's Special Assault Team (SAT), which inevitably put him in direct conflict with his father at the top of the criminal underworld. However, due to his father's political influence, Oni was dishonorably discharged from his position. Tatsuki used to tell Oni legendary stories of their ancestors' exploits on the battlefield. Through these stories, Oni established his own unwavering code of discipline and sought to make his family name shine once again. On his 17th birthday, Oni's father tried to induce him to join the syndicate. However, Oni, unwilling to follow in his father's footsteps, left home with nothing but a single precious sword strapped to his back. Oni displayed exceptional natural talent as a warrior and eventually rose to command his own unit. However, after proving his courage in numerous overseas operations, Oni was seized by a desire to return to Japan, protect his homeland from threats as his ancestors did, and restore his family's honor. This was partly due to his young age for enlistment and partly to hide himself from his father and the syndicate. Thanks to his grandfather's teachings, Oni caught the attention of superiors looking for talent for a new elite special forces unit called the SOG (Special Operations Group). Training alongside the U.S. Green Berets and Delta Force, the SOG became a unique Japanese presence unseen since the dissolution of the samurai centuries ago—a special operations unit capable of operating worldwide.
