When the moonlight fades and a thick darkness encroaches from all sides, bizarre entities formed from the world's negative energy and grudges reveal themselves. Since ancient times, these have been called 'Wolryeong' (Moon Spirits) or 'Wolyeonggwi' (Moon Shadow Ghosts), apparitions reflected in the moon's shadow. Their grotesqueness exceeds imagination; some Wolryeong descend upon human dwellings on moonless nights, leaving only eyes that gleam in blood-red corners to devour the breath of the living. Others, imbued with the cold energy of the full moon, possess skin harder than steel and use strange sorcery to turn an entire village into a bloodbath in an instant.
As the cries of the people echoed across the land due to the rampant outbreaks of these bizarre Wolryeong, the royal court secretly issued a sovereign decree to establish the 'Sawolcheong' (Bureau of Moon Management), a specialized organization dedicated to cutting down the evil energy of the moon and hunting the Wolryeong. The hunters of this bureau were known as 'Wolchamsa' (Moon Slayers). To combat the energy of the night, the Wolchamsa carry 'Wolgwangdo' (Moonlight Blades) forged from silver and dew gathered on moonless nights. With jade plaques tucked against their chests to detect the demonic energy of the Wolryeong, they secretly roam every corner of the southern provinces. Their lives are no different from dancing on the edge of a precipice of death every night.
On a frosty night of the full moon, in a remote valley where all human presence has vanished, a hideous Wolryeong exhales a red mist, preparing to attack a commoner's house. Just then, a Wolchamsa appears, black official robes fluttering, and draws a cold blade under the moonlight, charging toward the evil entity. The Wolryeong's bizarre roar tears through the night sky, and the silver trajectory of the slayer's blade tangles with the moon's shadow, sparking for a fleeting moment. The remnants of the unjustly dead soul and the form of the evil Wolryeong are finally cut down by a single blade, shattering and scattering into the cold night air.
Thus, the Wolchamsa of the Sawolcheong fight the Wolryeong alone under the shadow of the night, with only the moonlight as their lamp, their official ranks not even formally recognized by the court. The chilling sound of the wind outside your door tonight might be the breathing of a Wolryeong, or perhaps the sound of a Wolchamsa's blade, held in bated breath to strike it down.

Intro
The landscape of Joseon is originally a place where sheer cliffs and deep valleys wind continuously. When night falls, the mountain shadows swallow the villages right up to their doorsteps like hungry beasts in an ink wash painting. The structure of the houses, with their rugged tiled roofs and low thatched huts huddled together, creates a chilling scene where secret talismans are pasted on the edges of eaves and oak charcoal is woven and hung on door frames to barely ward off the demonic energy of the evil Wolryeong hiding in the moon's shadows.
When the sun sets and darkness descends, even the tavern streets and the marketplaces of Hanyang see strange silver-white 'Moonlight Will-o'-the-wisps' (Wolhwahwa) floating between paper money and wooden bars, illuminating the night path with a bluish, cold light. This light is different from the warm torches lit by humans; it grotesquely distorts shadows and ripples with a dark crimson blood-red color when something non-human passes by, sending a terrifying warning.
Furthermore, the guardian tree of the village shrine standing alone at the entrance in the deep of night emits a divine yet terrifying energy, dripping silver liquid as it drinks in the full moon. Occasionally, when the Wolchamsa of the Sawolcheong chase a Wolryeong across the cliffs, the fluttering tails of their black official robes and the moonlight will-o'-the-wisps tangle atop the tiled roofs to paint a bizarre and chilling night landscape. With the thick mist and the cries of mountain beasts blending together, the night of the Korean peninsula is a place where the breaths of the living, the dead, and the Wolryeong take turns passing by.
