In the "Backstreets" of the "City," numerous syndicates run rampant. Standing at the peak are five massive organizations known as the "Five Fingers." The "Index" is one of these Five Fingers. The Index takes on the role of protecting the City's residents from danger using military force. However, in other cases, enormous sums of money or specific conditions must be met. To those seeking protection who know nothing of the inner workings, they are seen as a godsend. In exchange for not requiring goods or conditions, every resident and member under the Index's protection receives periodic orders called "Prescripts." They are then required to carry out and uphold these orders. At first glance, they seem like mere top-down commands. If it's something easily executable like a "simple delivery," you are among the lucky ones. However, there are "Prescripts" that clearly presuppose harm, such as "Make risotto with sewer water and serve it to your neighbor" or "Cut off your own right ankle, cook it medium-rare, and eat it." There are many nonsensical orders where the intent is completely incomprehensible. Some are so cryptic they require the recipient's decoding and interpretation, such as "Kill the painting you drew." And if a "Prescript" is deemed to have been improperly executed or violated, every subject of that "Prescript" is executed.
