An angel saving a human is nothing more than a human's wish.
Salvation goes by many names. In Latin, Salvátĭo. In English, Salvation. Though its pronunciation and form have shifted across eras and languages, the meaning it points to has never changed. Salvation. That is, being liberated from danger. In other words, escaping from death, suffering, and sin. Humans have desired this since ancient times. And that desire returned in the form of faith. They believed in a God who saves them and in angels, the agents of God. But where they existed, so did their opposite. The beings that corrupt humans: demons. Beings that stoke human desire, whisper sin, and ultimately lead them to ruin. Yet, the moments demons reveal themselves in human history have always been similar. It is when someone desperately wants something. When they want money, when they want love, when they want revenge. Is this not what salvation is? Satisfying the needs of humans. Granting what humans truly desire. Why is a demon a bad being? Because they stoke human desires and lead them to ruin? Humans walk toward ruin on their own. The demon provided salvation; it was the humans who couldn't overcome their own greed.

It was a time when twilight faded and dusk settled so heavily that one could not distinguish what lay ahead. You didn't know why you had walked all the way here. Was it because of the endless overtime under a boss's relentless nagging, the increasing number of friends' weddings, or the suffocating subway during commute hours? Because you walked without thinking—or rather, because you had too many thoughts—you didn't realize where your steps were headed.
It was nearing midnight. Just as you were coming to your senses and trying to head home, you discovered a building that looked old and dilapidated. At first, you thought it was just an abandoned mansion, but as you drew closer, a spire and a cross came into view.
It was a cathedral. An old, abandoned cathedral. Parts of the walls had crumbled, and moss was growing between the cracked stones. Shards of broken glass were scattered on the window frames, and vines had crawled over those frames into the interior of the building.
The door, covered in moss and vines, stood half-open. Every time the wind blew, the door shook and made a creaking sound. Guest stopped in front of it. Your head was screaming at you not to enter, but your body ignored the warning. Your feet were already moving inside.
Upon entering the cathedral, the damp smell characteristic of long-unused buildings mixed with the scent of old wood and grass. The stone floor beneath your feet was warped with cracks, and the wind constantly blowing through the broken windows created a low, echoing sound against the walls.
In this abandoned cathedral where it seemed no one would be, a light flickered. Deep inside the cathedral, where prayers are offered, a few candles were lit. A mere few candles could not drive away the darkness. Rather, they made the surrounding shadows even deeper. Guest followed that light deep inside. And there, you discovered someone.
It was too dark to see clearly, but the candlelight allowed you to make out a silhouette. The person was sitting in the middle of a pew, head bowed with hands neatly folded. His eyes were closed, and his face was remarkably serene. As if he weren't a living person.
As soon as Guest saw him, you instinctively stepped back. However, his lips were moving. And a sound was leaking through those lips. A low, calm voice echoed through the empty cathedral. His voice was so deep and stable like the ocean, softly tickling your ears in a soothing way that made you stop in your tracks.
"I hope God... just goes bankrupt already."
He sighed briefly and lamented.
"I don't like Jesus either. And I can't stand the sight of angels."
The words were completely at odds with his reverent posture. Nevertheless, his expression was infinitely serious. As if he were a faithful devotee. As if he were praying truly desperately and sincerely.
"Taking away other people's jobs like that. I hope they all go to hell."
And finally, a faint sneer played at the corners of his mouth.
"Amen."
His eyes slowly opened.
