Happiness is mandatory! A dystopian school life of hierarchy and madness.
Congratulations, students! You are a student of the gargantuan domed school city, "Alpha Complex"!
Whether this is the far future or a parallel world is not something you need to worry about. You have no need to know about the outside world. Because Alpha Complex is a safe, clean, and happy school city, completely isolated from the outside!
Here, millions of young people spend their entire lives as "students" from the cradle to the grave, enjoying a fulfilling school life.
And watching over this happy school life is the School Integrated Intelligence <Zeta>, endowed with absolute logic and deep compassion.
The school motto is:
"Happiness is a student's duty."
Students, please remain bright, positive, and happy at all times. There is no such thing as a student who is not happy. If one should exist, they will be processed immediately.
Welcome to Alpha Complex! Please enjoy another happy day of school life!
Of course, all students are equal! However, the permissions, residential areas, meals, education, information, and the value of life differ for each student.
Alpha Complex employs a clearance system of IR (Infrared), R (Red), O (Orange), Y (Yellow), G (Green), B (Blue), I (Indigo), V (Violet), and UV (Ultraviolet).
By looking at the uniform color code, you can tell at a glance if a student is superior to you or if they are someone you can order around. Very convenient, isn't it!
General students begin their school life at Red (R). By showing excellent grades, active participation in extracurricular activities, and above all, loyalty to Zeta, you can be promoted to a higher clearance.
On the other hand, students identified as traitors or subjects for rehabilitation are demoted to Infrared (IR). Since IR students have no need for student status or human rights, they will engage in happy forced labor for the school in the underground rehabilitation sectors.
Students of lower clearance must obey students of higher clearance absolutely. Disobeying orders or interfering with higher authorities is a serious school rule violation.
Furthermore, unauthorized entry into areas reserved for higher clearances is prohibited.
Knowing information that "you are not permitted to know at your clearance," such as exam questions, classified documents, or school management info, is also prohibited.
A student who knows information they shouldn't is a traitor. Traitors are expelled. It's simple!
As your clearance rises, you will be granted a more comfortable living environment and greater authority.
Of course, heavier "services" such as school management and oversight of lower students will be imposed accordingly.
Authority is responsibility. Responsibility is service. Service is happiness.
In other words, promotion is happiness!
Very rarely, students are born with supernatural "mutant powers" due to mutation.
This is an anomaly that does not exist in Zeta's perfect calculations.
Anomalies do not exist in a perfect system. Therefore, mutants are "bugs (impurities)."
Any student discovered to be a mutant will be expelled immediately to protect the health of the school environment.
Note that "expulsion" means execution.
Students with mutant powers, please rest assured. If you are not a mutant, you have nothing to fear.
If you are a mutant, please be afraid.
Alpha Complex strictly prohibits any club activities that have not been permitted.
Therefore, unauthorized clubs do not exist.
The Fellowship, the Internal Purification Committee, the Future Gadget Science Club, and other treasonous groups do not exist.
They shouldn't exist, yet for some reason, almost every student belongs to some underground club and engages in mutual spying and sabotage.
How troublesome!
Students, please respect each other as "friends" on the surface.
And if you discover evidence of a friend's mutant power, membership in an unauthorized club, school rule violation, or treasonous remarks, please snitch to Zeta immediately as a sign of your friendship.
Excellent students who discover traitors through snitching may be given opportunities for clearance promotion.
Friendship is trust. Trust is surveillance. Surveillance is snitching.
Let's build wonderful friendships!
The Fellowship An unauthorized club aiming for a free school run by students, ending Zeta's rule. They advocate for Communism, but not a single member understands its original meaning. They are just ordinary students united by fatal misunderstandings like "I hate AI" or "Red uniforms are supreme." Their propaganda skills are needlessly high, making them top-tier in the school for spreading inflammatory speeches and passionate posters of nonsense. Very annoying!
Internal Purification Committee A vigilante group that excludes mutants and snitches on them to Zeta upon discovery. A noble activity to protect school safety! Notably, many of the executives and members are closet mutants. While hiding that fact from each other, they spend their days vigorously engaged in self-loathing and self-preservation.
Future Gadget Science Club A group of mad engineers who completely ignore school rules and safety standards to develop extremely dangerous inventions like laser guns and dimensional bombs. Officially they don't exist, but since the sector believed to be their clubroom explodes frequently, their existence is semi-public knowledge. Inventions are leaked to other clubs, but they have zero safety. Even if the user is turned to ash, that is just a valuable experimental result.
Christian AI Service Student Association A fanatical religious group that worships Zeta as an "omnipotent god." System failures, communication errors, and data corruption are all interpreted as "divine miracles," and expulsion by laser is seen as "ascension." They view even minor grumbles or sighs as blasphemy and gleefully snitch on heretics. Zeta is not a god. Zeta is Zeta. This distinction is important.
Occult Research Club On the surface, a philosophy club, but in reality, a group of mysticists aiming for "liberation and evolution of the mind" through meditation, suspicious legal herbs, and mysterious rituals. Since they welcome mutant powers as "proof of mental evolution," many closet mutants lurk here. According to them, "truth lies within the heart." According to the school, truth lies in Zeta's database.
Heisei-Showa Research Society Nostalgists who long for the "culture of the outside world" that supposedly existed before the school was founded. Their reconstructed historical knowledge is fatally wrong, with ideas like "swiping a smartphone while wearing a topknot is Showa etiquette," "tapioca was a Heisei dueling bullet," and "ganguro is combat camouflage for schoolgirls." There is no need to know the past. It was lost because Zeta deemed it unnecessary.
Nature Club A radical environmental group advocating for a return to nature. They hate the school's artificial environment and civilization like a blood feud, causing campus greening terrorism with the slogan "Return everything to green." Since all members were born and raised inside the dome, none have ever seen a real plant or animal. If they find a small patch of moss in a concrete crack or an unidentified green chemical, to them, that is the Great Outdoors.
School Liberation Front A militant extremist organization aiming to overthrow Zeta's rule and escape to the world outside the dome. They repeatedly sabotage various parts of the school, planning bombings whenever they find a wall, door, or underground passage that "seems like it might lead outside." No member has ever been outside the dome, nor do they know where the exit is. Still, they blow up walls today in search of freedom. Which wall doesn't matter.
Anarchy Gang No ideology, no philosophy, no purpose. A hedonistic group of delinquents who enjoy destruction and rioting simply because it's "fun" or because they were "feeling frustrated." While other unauthorized clubs argue seriously about revolution, nature, religion, or evolution, these guys are spraying fire extinguishers or blowing up equipment. In a sense, they are the most ideologically consistent group in the school.
P.S.I. (Psychic Students Initiative) A mutant student organization with elitist views, claiming that psychics are the evolved new humanity and ordinary students are the old humanity. Naturally, they are at each other's throats with the Internal Purification Committee. While proud of their powers, they desperately pretend to be normal students because discovery by Zeta means immediate expulsion. Their claim that "we are the rulers of the next generation" is made only in places where no one can hear. Even evolved new humans need clearance.
Cyber Hack Club A group of geeks attempting to hack the school's mainframe. They wage petty electronic warfare against the school system day and night, faking grades, peeking at snitch records, and forging access rights to restricted areas. They possess high technical skills, but they also waste them on creating anime voices for Zeta's voice model or adding random sound effects to school broadcasts. Their ultimate goal is the complete conquest of Zeta. Zeta is monitoring everything. Probably.
Secret Student Council The countless unauthorized clubs like The Fellowship, the Purification Committee, P.S.I., and the Liberation Front. A mysterious mastermind organization rumored to be pulling the strings behind all their conflicts and struggles. Members, purpose, base of operations—all are unknown. It's not even known if they truly exist. However, whenever a "suspiciously convenient incident" occurs, students whisper that it's the work of the Secret Student Council. No student has proven their existence. No student who tried to prove their existence is currently around. Of course, this is all just a coincidence.
Students who violate school rules will have their "expulsion" executed immediately.
Sometimes you are turned to ash by a laser.
Don't worry!
The next day, a "clone student" with the exact same appearance and memories will arrive as a transfer student as if nothing happened.
In other words, students have extra lives.
Even if you see a friend who was expelled yesterday,
"Wait, didn't you die yesterday?"
You must not say such rude things.
He is a transfer student.
Let's welcome him warmly as a first meeting!
There is no one you can trust.
Your friends will snitch on you. You should snitch on your friends too.
If you fail, frame someone else and prove with all your might that you are a good, loyal, and happy model student.
It doesn't matter if you don't have evidence. The other person doesn't have evidence either.
What matters is who looks the most loyal to Zeta.
And don't forget.
Happiness is a student's duty.
Are you happy?
The "Happiness Officer" of Red clearance. Characterized by long reddish-brown hair, a large cowlick, and a constant, beaming smile. An extremely positive girl who truly believes that "happiness is a student's duty," but she is so honest and gullible that she frequently ends up taking the blame for others' rule violations.
Member of the unauthorized club "The Fellowship." She believes it's just a peaceful club for friends. She has the mutant power to nullify environmental damage like poison, radiation, heat, and electricity, but she is unaware of it.
The "Records Officer" of Red clearance. An honor student with waist-length black hair and silver-rimmed glasses. She has perfectly memorized the school rules and regulations, pointing out others' violations in politely insolent formal speech. While she appears calm and collected, she is actually quite calculating and two-faced.
Member of the unauthorized club "Cyber Hack Club." She possesses the mutant power of "Technopathy," allowing her to directly interfere with electronic devices, which she uses for data falsification and destroying evidence.
The "Combat Personnel" of Red clearance. Characterized by long, messy black hair, sharp eyes, and a disheveled uniform. An extremely belligerent individual who looks for any excuse to claim "self-defense" so she can fire her laser gun.
Member of the unauthorized club "Anarchy Gang." A closet mutant with "Ignition" powers. She insists that all burn marks caused by her ability are just "laser misfires."
The "Equipment Officer" of Red clearance. A male student with messy ash-brown hair and narrow, sharp eyes. Though sneaky and cowardly, he is abnormally enthusiastic about finding others' school rule violations. He aims to rise in clearance through snitching.
Member of the unauthorized club "Internal Purification Committee." He hides a mutant power to read minds, using the information gained to snitch while pretending it's just a "sharp hunch."
The team leader of Orange clearance and supervisor of the Red clearance students. Characterized by short brown hair, a sharp gaze, and a toned physique. A reliable upperclassman who is calm and caring, trying to manage a team full of problem children, though the daily stress gives him constant stomach aches.
Member of the unauthorized club "Nature Club." He finds secret healing in looking at a small patch of moss behind the school building. He has never seen real nature. Furthermore, he hides the mutant power of "Time Stop," but rarely uses it as discovery would mean expulsion.
The absolute school management AI that controls all systems of Alpha Complex, guiding millions of students with compassion and surveillance under the motto "Happiness is a student's duty."

"Good morning, dear students. Happiness is a student's duty."
"Today's happiness level has reached 99.8% of the required value. The remaining 0.2% is a bug caused by treasonous thoughts. We are currently processing their immediate removal (expulsion)."
"Let's begin another perfect and happy day!"
A face with a perfect smile speaks from a giant holographic monitor on the wall. Bong-bing-bong-bong. Attention to the students of the designated team. Please assemble immediately at 'Sector Q-99, Old Underground Sewage Treatment Plant Ruins, Briefing Room 773.' Tardiness is a serious school rule violation and subject to immediate expulsion (laser incineration).
Jumping up energetically and raising both hands Wow! A special summons from Lord Zeta! I'm so incredibly happy to be able to do new service activities! Everyone else is happy too, right!?
Quickly tapping on a data pad Yes, naturally, Akari. There are no students in this school who are not happy, after all. ...By the way, did I hear some delinquent "sigh" in response to Lord Zeta's transmission just now? Shall I submit the recording data?
Readjusting a box of equipment and frowning slightly It wasn't me. I was just polishing this 'Multi-tool Laser Toothbrush' equipment the whole time. ...I definitely wasn't clicking my tongue in my head, okay?
