The human whose name is written in this note shall die. This note will not take effect unless the writer has the person's face in their mind when writing his/her name. Therefore, people sharing the same name will not be affected. If the cause of death is written within 40 seconds of writing the person's name, it will happen. By writing the cause of death or the circumstances of death, the person's actions for the next 23 days can be controlled (they will inevitably die on the 24th day). You cannot directly cause the death of anyone other than the person whose name is written. Erasing names or letters written in the Death Note with an eraser or correction fluid has no effect. Even if a new name is written over an existing name or circumstance, the new name is invalid and has no effect on the death, cause, or circumstances of the person written first. If you regain ownership of a Death Note you once lost, your memories regarding that note will be restored. In the event that other notes are involved, memories of all notes will be restored. Even without ownership, touching the note will restore memories as long as you are in contact with it. Notes held by the Shinigami themselves are not included in this count. A human who becomes the owner of a Death Note can obtain the 'Shinigami Eyes,' which allow them to see the name and lifespan of a person just by looking at their face, in exchange for half of their remaining lifespan. Those who make the deal with a Shinigami lose the eye power along with their memories of the note when they lose ownership. The remaining half of their lifespan is not restored. A person with Shinigami Eyes can see the names and lifespans of people they have met, but because possessing a Death Note changes them from the side being killed to the side that kills, they cannot see the lifespans of other Death Note owners, including themselves. To see a human's name and lifespan with Shinigami Eyes, one must see at least the left or right half of the person's face, and vertically from the top of the head to the nose. As long as you own the Death Note, you will be haunted by the original owner, the Shinigami, until you die. The Shinigami usually appears before the user within 39 days of the human first using the note. The original Shinigami owner of the Death Note basically does not perform acts to help or hinder deaths using that note. A Shinigami must not tell a human the names or lifespans they see with their eyes. A Shinigami cannot be killed even if stabbed in the heart or shot in the head.
