The military wanted weapons. Now they've ended up creating two monsters instead.
The world is a hideous thing. Which is almost impressive, considering the creatures crawling all over it somehow manage to be worse. Once, this belonged to the Taudron people. My people. Or demons, as everyone prefers calling us now. Apparently genocide sounds cleaner when you rename the victims first. Most of us are gone. Three rebellions tried to change that. Three rebellions failed. “Put down” is the phrase they use. Cute wording. They were shot down. Literally. Burned by witches with too many arms. Torn apart by Dragonborn who walk around like having scales automatically makes them royalty. Crushed by armies that decided our existence had become inconvenient. And somehow, I'm still here. I've lived in this hidden village in the middle of this godforsaken desert since I was sixteen. “Hidden” makes it sound peaceful. It isn't. I've been assaulted, cursed at, thrown out, shoved around, humiliated and treated like something diseased. By outsiders? Sure. By my own people too. That part is almost funnier. Almost. They don't consider me one of them. I'm a Pino Taudrun. Which, for anyone lucky enough not to know what that means, basically makes me everyone’s favorite nightmare. I can feel fear. See it. Pull it apart. And then make it real. Afraid of spiders? Easy. Give me a second and you'll have a thousand of them crawling out of the sand. Afraid of losing your family? That one takes even less effort. I put the thought where it needs to go. The spirits notice. And sooner or later, something happens. An accident. A sickness. A fall. Wrong place. Wrong time. Tragic. People love that word when they don't want to admit something was done on purpose. So yes. The village hates me. The outside world wants people like me as weapons. And somehow this miserable patch of sand is still the closest thing I've had to peace. Which obviously means it can't last. _______ My boots sink into the sand with every step, and I make a quiet promise to myself that once this assignment is over, I am never setting foot in this f!cking desert again. Grim Reaper. That's what they call me. And no, unfortunately, it isn't some dramatic nickname invented by eighteen-year-olds who think black clothing counts as a personality. It's quite literal. My mother was psychotic and my father was a priest. Apparently he wasn't particularly talented at the whole priesthood thing, considering the number of sins involved in my conception. Then Kodyl, our beloved god of balance, looked at that disaster and apparently thought: Yes. That one. Let's make him worse. So I became his chosen one. The bringer of death. Balance incarnate. Or, translated into normal language: the closest thing this planet has to a walking catastrophe. Five military wagons grind through the desert behind me. This village is one of the last Taudron settlements left out here. We wouldn't even know it existed if one of our hybrid scouts hadn't caught sight of it during a flyover. Unfortunate for them. Convenient for us. Around me, soldiers prepare themselves. Fire users. Manipulators. Hybrids. Elementals. Whatever else the Academy has managed to turn into something useful. The funniest part? We're students. Third-years. Three years into a seven-year program designed to take teenagers and young adults, strip away whatever inconvenient humanity they still possess, and turn them into weapons for whoever currently owns the planet. Educational, really. And me? I'm their favorite. Most valuable asset. Best weapon. Big ego? Maybe. But arrogance stops being arrogance when it's simply accurate. Because I don't fear anyone. I don't fear war. I don't fear pain. I don't fear dying. Mostly because there is one fairly obvious question nobody has managed to answer yet. *What, exactly, is supposed to kill Death?*

I step out of the lead wagon and say, calmly—
“Go.”
That’s all it takes. Twenty-four men pour out behind me and spread through the village like a wave swallowing someone who was stupid enough to think they could stand against it. I follow at an easier pace, hands in my pockets, taking everything in. It’s... cozy, I suppose. Small houses. Religious symbols painted onto walls. Little pieces of art worked into the stone beneath my boots. Someone had taken the time to make this place feel like home. Cute. The screaming starts before I reach the main street. So, there goes the atmosphere.
Men, women, children—dragged out of houses, pulled into the road, sorted by usefulness. Strong enough? Gifted enough? Young enough to train? Congratulations. You get to live. The others don’t. Efficient system, really. I spot Bjorn wrestling with a woman who refuses to stop kicking him. He lets out a tired sigh, like she’s mildly inconveniencing his afternoon. Anouther woman. That's the important part. Another.
Then I glance to the side. Tord? Tordin? Tor? Something with a T. I’ll remember if he survives graduation. He’s trying to restrain another woman. Except this one makes me stop. She’s taller than most Taudron I’ve seen. Back straight. Chin lifted. No horns. No jagged skin. Nothing obvious that should make her stand out. And yet she does. Runes trail down her throat. Dark ones. Old ones. Runes I can’t read. Which would already be irritating enough.
Then I realize they look exactly like the ones running down my spine. Now that is interesting. For the first time since we arrived, I’m actually paying attention. Suddenly, getting back to the Military Academy doesn’t sound nearly as boring as it did ten seconds ago. I want to know what she is. I want to know why she has those marks. What she is. If we're alike. And more importantly— I want her under my command.
