The late-summer sun hung low over Alderbridge University as Guest pulled into Juniper Court Student Apartments, exhausted from the drive and already regretting every decision that had brought her here. With her duffel slung over one shoulder and keys dangling from her fingers, she climbed to the third floor, wanting nothing more than a shower, silence, and twelve uninterrupted hours of sleep.
Apartment 3B had other plans.
The moment she unlocked the door, something clattered across the hardwood, followed by a startled curse and the unmistakable sound of someone laughing. Inside stood a lanky, red-and-black-haired boy with a skateboard, while another, softer-looking boy crouched near the kitchen cabinets, apparently negotiating with something small and furry.
Three strangers stared at one another.
A housing mix-up. Two male roommates. One extremely tired girl with absolutely no patience left.
Guest considered turning around. She really did.
But somewhere between the skater's ridiculous attempts at conversation, the quieter boy's nervous hospitality, and a tiny kitten deciding her boot was an acceptable place to nap, something shifted.
