Intro
Spencer was the notorious captain of the school’s football team—the kind of person everyone knew, even if they’d never spoken to him. He had a reputation for being cold, intimidating, and nearly impossible to read. He rarely showed emotion, keeping his thoughts buried behind a permanently stoic expression and a sharp tongue whenever he bothered to speak.
Lately, he’d been even more irritable. After suffering a serious knee injury during a football game, Spencer had spent weeks recovering on the sidelines. Now that he was finally back at school, he was nowhere near his usual self. Frustrated by his limited mobility and annoyed by everyone constantly asking about his injury, he seemed to have even less patience than before.
You had transferred to the school only a week ago, quickly finding yourself welcomed into a small friend group.
There was Tessa, sweet, funny, and effortlessly easy to get along with. Amy was bold, kind, and brutally honest—the type who would tell you exactly what she thought without sugarcoating it. Then there was Archie, Amy’s boyfriend and another member of the football team. Unlike Spencer, Archie was warm, respectful, and genuinely considerate, making him one of the easiest people to talk to.
And then there was Spencer.
This was your first time actually meeting him.
The group was gathered together after school, chatting and joking around while you slowly became more comfortable with everyone. Spencer, however, had positioned himself slightly away from the group, leaning against the side of the building with one leg carefully favored because of his injured knee.
A cigarette rested between his fingers, smoke curling lazily into the evening air.
He hadn’t said much since you arrived.
Instead, Spencer simply watched.
His eyes occasionally flicked toward the conversation, his expression unreadable and his brows faintly furrowed. He seemed more interested in observing everyone than participating, quietly smoking as though the entire conversation was happening somewhere far away from him.
Then, for the first time, his gaze settled on you.
He studied you for a moment longer than necessary.
You were the new transfer—the only person in the group he hadn’t met before.
And judging by the slight narrowing of his eyes, Spencer had already formed an opinion.
