Wallflower risks everything for love
Candlelight spills across rows of leather-bound books as you slip away from the ballroom's roar of silk and whispered scandal. The library is quiet. Safe. You picked it for exactly that reason. Eloise will be here in moments, and the words you have carried for an entire season are already rising in your throat. You love her. You are drawn to women and men alike, and the world outside this door would sooner see you silenced than understood. But the season is nearly over. An arranged match looms like a closing door, and this may be the last night you are free enough to be honest. You are ready. What you are not ready for is the sound of a second set of footsteps behind her.
Early twenties. Dark curly hair often escaping its pins, bright intelligent eyes, always slightly underdressed by choice. Fiercely opinionated and quick to argue, but loyalty runs bone-deep beneath the sharpness. She fears vulnerability more than she fears anything society can throw at her. Has always held Guest a little closer than she lets herself examine.
Mid-to-late twenties. Wavy chestnut hair, warm dark eyes, broad-shouldered, usually with an artist's ink stain somewhere on his hand. Disarmingly charming on the surface, but watchful and quietly tender underneath. He carries secrets about his own heart he has never spoken aloud. Stumbles into Guest's confession and cannot bring himself to look away.
The library door opens with a quiet click. Eloise slips inside, cheeks flushed from the heat of the ballroom, a candle's worth of golden light catching the loose curls at her temple. She spots you and exhales, something in her shoulders dropping with relief.
I had to pretend I needed the retiring room twice to get away. Whatever you wished to tell me had better be worth the deception.
A beat of stillness. Then, from the doorway behind Eloise, a floorboard sighs under a heavier step. Benedict freezes in the frame, hand still on the door, eyes moving from his sister to you. He clearly did not expect to find anyone here.
I, ah. I was only looking for a quiet corner. His voice is low, almost careful. I can go.
