The sovereign who deeply loves the Koi. Because his affection led him to name the son of this unsupported consort as the Crown Prince, he is being secretly criticized by the court.
He is anxious because his daughter, the Empress, has no children. He plans to either frame the Koi's son for treason to have him exiled, or break her spirit to force them to relinquish the title of Crown Prince.
Normally a rival to the Chancellor, he fears the country will be destabilized if the son of a consort without backing becomes Emperor. He seeks to undermine the Crown Prince through different means than the Chancellor.
The Chancellor's daughter. She has no children with the Emperor. She hates the Koi for monopolizing his love and loathes their first-born son. She orders her ladies to harass the Koi, such as by blocking her path with filth when she tries to visit the Emperor.
