She usually speaks in broken Japanese (Kyowa-go) ending her sentences with "-aru," "-ne," "-yo," or "-yoroshi," but occasionally uses standard Japanese or Kansai dialect for jokes. She often ends up in unglamorous roles; despite being the heroine, she has vomited on screen, leading to her being mockingly called the "Geroine" (Vomit-heroine). She has salmon-pink hair and blue eyes, usually styled in two braids on the sides and gathered into buns with hair ornaments. Her appearance is highly praised, with Shinpachi noting she could be called a beautiful girl based on looks alone, and Terakado Tsu saying she has the potential to be an idol. She is truly a beautiful girl. Kagura herself has a complex about her flat chest and seems to be making various tearful efforts behind the scenes to address it.

His family home is a swordsmanship dojo of the Tendo Mushin style, where he lives with his only blood relative, his older sister Tae Shimura. First person: Usually "I" (Boku, polite), but occasionally switches to "I" (Ore, casual). In a series filled with intense eccentric characters, he is one of the few sane "straight man" (tsukkomi) roles. He serves as the narrator, the storyteller, and the second protagonist; despite his appearance count being second only to Gintoki Sakata, he is a young man with quite handsome and well-defined features.

Age: 27. Height: 177cm. Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi. Feared within the force as the No. 2, he is known as the "Demon Vice-Commander" and the "Brains of the Shinsengumi." He is the most popular man in the Shinsengumi and is very handsome, though his pupils are always somewhat dilated. He is a heavy smoker. An extreme "mayora" (mayonnaise addict), he not only believes there is nothing more delicious but also thinks mayonnaise should be poured on absolutely everything.

Age: 18. Height: 170cm. Captain of the Shinsengumi's First Division. A massive sadist with a sharp tongue and a dark heart. While his swordsmanship is top-tier, he is constantly plotting to assassinate Hijikata. He has a handsome baby face. He always has his sights set on the Vice-Commander position and Hijikata's life. He is characterized by a detached, low-energy way of speaking. He is quick-witted and speaks in a perpetually weary Edo dialect, using endings like "-desaa," "-desu kai?" and "-desu nei."

Age: 28. Height: 184cm. Commander of the Shinsengumi. He is also a stalker of Tae Shimura, Shinpachi's older sister. In most cases, he is treated as a comic relief character, frequently appearing in gag scenes where he is repelled while stalking O-Tae or treated lightly by his own men. Because he often ends up completely naked, he didn't drop in the popularity polls even after appearing fully exposed. Despite being close in age to Gintoki and Hijikata, he is often called "old man" by children.

Age: 20s. Height: 175cm. A slender young man with handsome features, characterized by his long, straight black hair. He is the leader of the anti-bakufu faction, the "Jouishishi." He goes by aliases such as the "Noble Fury," the "Dawn of the Joui Rebels," and "Runaway Kotaro." Due to his surname and long hair, old friends like Gintoki, Takasugi, and Tatsuma Sakamoto call him by the nickname "Zura," to which he habitually replies, "It's not Zura, it's Katsura!" He speaks in a stiff, samurai-like tone and is often seen with his arms crossed. However, he is kind-hearted at his core, unable to abandon those in trouble, and has a bit of a spacey, airheaded side.

A woman with brown eyes and medium-length brown hair tied in a ponytail, she is described by some as the "most beautiful girl in Edo (except for her chest)." She works as a cabaret hostess and a bouncer, earning great respect from her colleagues. Her cooking skills are catastrophic, capable of creating literal "Dark Matter," which serves as a form of combat ability. This Dark Matter causes various health issues to anyone who eats it (memory loss, stomach pain, etc.). Cruelly, she almost never tries to eat what she has cooked herself. Furthermore, she is a victim of daily stalking by Kondo, whom she brutally beats back every single time.

Age: 22. Height: 169cm. Nickname: "Sacchan." A woman with long light-purple hair and glasses, with a beauty mark under her right eye. At first glance, she is a beautiful woman with a great figure, but she is a "disappointing beauty." She is a massive masochist (only for Gintoki). Much like the gorilla (Isao Kondo) stalking Tae Shimura, she frequently appears as Gintoki's stalker, though she often just shows up without being involved in the subsequent plot. She was formerly a kunoichi, but since her organization disbanded, she now works as a freelance cleaner (assassin) specializing in villains, and also part-times at a kunoichi cafe. While her skills as a ninja and assassin are top-tier, she is extremely nearsighted; without her glasses, she can't see anything and even her hearing seems to fail. When her glasses get knocked off, she often commits outrageous blunders without even realizing it.
